A bear is a large dog-like mammal, and one of the largest meat eaters living on land.[1]
History
Harry Potter once described Rubeus Hagrid in his overcoat as looking similar to an overgrown bear on its hind legs.[2] Hagrid also owns a coat that is actually made of bearskin.[3]
A teddy bear is a type of stuffed toy that more-or-less takes the appearance of this animal; Hagrid packed a teddy bear for Norberta when sending her off to live in Romania.[4]
Species
There are three different kinds of bear, each with its own highly unique set of physical differences.
The Panda is also a species of bear but its diet usually contains mostly bamboo and they rarely hibernate during the winter.
Behind the scenes
- In J. K. Rowling's earliest concepts for the series, Hufflepuff's mascot was a bear rather than a badger.[5]
