"Hi, my name is Marilyn. I have a lovely collection of beetle pincers!"
An eccentric Hufflepuff student[src]

Beetles are the group of insects with the largest number of known species. Beetles and parts of their anatomy are known potion ingredients.

Black beetle eyes were sold at the apothecaries in Diagon Alley. The rate was five Knuts a scoop in 1991.[1] Severus Snape kept a jar of dead ones in his office.

In 1991, when Rubeus Hagrid first arrived at the Hut-on-the-Rock, Harry Potter felt that his eyes glinted "like black beetles under all the hair."[1]

In 1992, Ronald Weasley accidentally squashed a beetle which he was supposed to be Transfiguring into a button, due to his broken wand producing a large amount of smoke, which obscured his vision. This annoyed Professor McGonagall, the Transfiguration teacher.[2]

In 1993, a Pocket Sneakoscope that was later given to Harry Potter kept lighting up because Fred and George Weasley had put beetles in Bill Weasley's soup.[3]

On Christmas 1994, Harry watched a beetle crawling on a stone reindeer while trying to avoid listening to Hagrid's and Olympe Maxime's conversation outside durnig the Yule Ball.[4]

During the Second task of the Triwizard Tournament, Viktor Krum noticed that Hermione Granger had a water beetle in her hair after she was rescued from the Great Lake.[5]

The Animagus of Rita Skeeter was a beetle, which allowed her to discretely spy and eavesdrop on conversations. She was one of the four known unregistered Animagi of the twentieth century.[6]
