A beetroot (called a beet in North America) was the edible taproot of the plant Beta vulgaris. Cultivated by humans as a vegetable, beetroot was noted for its intense red flesh, which was sometimes used to make food colouring.[1]

History[]

During the 1890–1891 school year, William Dale, brother of Samantha Dale a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, suffered a curse that caused his feet to be turned into purples beets.[2]

In Marauding with Monsters, Gilderoy Lockhart claimed that he once helped some fans in Essex rid their yard of Horklumps, and in return was offered several bottles of home-brewed Celery and Beetroot Wine, which he declined.[3]

On 23 June 1991, when Harry Potter innocently mentioned that he had a dream involving a flying motorbike that morning, his uncle Vernon Dursley became enraged, which made his face look like a "gigantic beetroot with a moustache".[4]

The Gurdyroot infusion Xenophilius Lovegood served Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger upon their visit to his house on 30 December 1997 was described as being "as deeply purple as beetroot juice".[5]
