- "I have no doubt he's that much of a moonmind. We'd told him we were coming, didn't we? All he had to do was move the toads."
- — Belinda Brown, quoted by the Daily Prophet following a Ministry raid on an alleged Cornish Basilisk breeder in 1890[src]
Belinda Brown was a witch who worked for the British Ministry of Magic, in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures in the 1890s.[3]
Biography[]
In late 1890, Brown was quoted in a Daily Prophet article about the arrest of a Cornish wizard charged with breeding Basilisks after a routine Ministry inspection revealed toads in all five of his chicken coops. The wizard pleaded ignorance before the Wizengamot, which was met with widespread scepticism; Belinda Brown, however, was of the belief the wizard was indeed oblivious to the fact that a Basilisk was born from a chicken egg hatched beneath a toad, since he had been informed of the inspection and had seemingly made no effort to conceal the toads.[3]
Brown was also quoted in another Daily Prophet article regarding a Cornish wizard allegedly breeding a chicken with a Common Welsh Green dragon to create a supposed hybrid nicknamed the "Dricken". Although technically legal at the time, the Ministry started to look into confirming the existence of the creature and some of the wizard's other rumoured cross-breeds, such as a Billywig crossed with a scallop, a goat crossed with a Mooncalf, and a Niffler crossed with a beetle, in order to ensure that none of them caused any harm to the wizarding or Muggle communities nearby if they did exist. Brown commented on the rumour by claiming that the Ministry's concerns would be greater if the supposed "Dricken" was a dragon-sized chicken rather than a chicken-sized dragon.[3]
Following the Dricken's capture in the town of Newquay, Belinda Brown was quoted in a follow-up Daily Prophet article, commenting that the British Ministry of Magic had ensured the safety of both the creature and the citizens of Newquay and was looking into the rumours of the Dricken's origin through experimental breeding, with Belinda asserting that such experimental breeding should be made illegal.[4]
