"The children have been asking about your return. Belvina in particular chooses to do so each day at breakfast and is engulfed in a sulk when I remind her that you are ensuring the quality of her future education."
— A letter by Ursula Flint to her husband, Phineas Nigellus Black[src]

Belvina Burke (née Black) (18861962) was a pure-blood witch and a member of the noble House of Black. She was the only daughter of Phineas Nigellus Black and Ursula Flint. She was also the sister of Sirius II, Phineas, Arcturus and Cygnus II. She married Herbert Burke, and they had three children: two sons and a daughter.[1]

Biography[]

When her father was appointed the role of Headmaster at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, she asked her mother every day at breakfast when he would return and would sulk when her mother reminded her that her father was ensuring the quality of her future education.[2]

Later in life, she married the pure-blood Herbert Burke, and together they had two sons and a daughter.

Etymology[]

The name Belvina does not fit in with the Black family tradition of naming its members after stars or constellations. It may derived from Latin, in which it would mean something like "lovely wine" or "fair one". Alternatively, it could be derived from Beltane, an ancient Celtic holiday related to Walpurgis Night, "Witches' Night".[3]

Behind the scenes[]

  • Based on a statement by Horace Slughorn, Belvina may have been a member of the Slytherin House. However, she attended Hogwarts c. 1897 - 1904, when Slughorn was not Potions teacher.
  • It is possible that she was related to Elizabeth Burke by marriage.
  • It is also possible that Araminta Meliflua was her granddaughter, since she was described as a cousin of Walburga Black (Belvina's great-niece) and then it can be assumed that they were in the same generation.
