Bewitched sleep (incantation unknown) was an advanced charm that put the target into a deep sleep;[1] the subject was in a state almost like suspended animation and did not breathe for the duration of the spell.[2]
History
The Serpent of Slytherin was placed under a bewitched sleep within the Statue of Slytherin. So long as she slept, she did not age, hence allowing her to survive for a millennium, waiting for the Heir of Slytherin to reawaken her to purge the school of Muggle-borns.[3]
Fleur Delacour tried to put her dragon into a trance during the first task of the Triwizard Tournament, but it was only partially successful, as the dragon snored and caught the hem of her robes on fire.[1] It was also the spell that Albus Dumbledore used on the hostages in the Second Task of the Triwizard Tournament.[2]
