This Billywig inhabited the Magical Creatures Reserve in Scotland.[1]
Biography[]
In the 1980s or early 1990s, Jacob's sibling would often bond with and feed this Billywig.[1]
During the 1988–1989 school year, a swarm of six Billywigs was captured and placed inside a jar to be sold on the black market, as Billywigs could fetch a high price. However, members of the British Ministry of Magic found and rescued them before they could be sold off. The Ministry gave the Billywig swarm to Rubeus Hagrid for safe-keeping, who intended to allow them to live in the Desert Dunes biome of the Magical Creatures Reserve. However, while attempting to transport the Billywigs to the reserve, Hagrid accidentally dropped the jar containing them, enabling them to escape. Although Hagrid was able to recapture one of the Billywigs, it still managed to sting Fang, causing him to feel increased giddiness and to float in the air for half the day. Hagrid, fearing that the dog might be suffering from an allergic reaction to Billywig stings, which could result in the floating becoming permanent, called Jacob's sibling to his hut to help him out with his predicament. After Hagrid informed Jacob's sibling of the situation and that an antidote to Billywig stings existed, Jacob's sibling helped him get Fang back down to the ground through the use of the Descending Charm, although this was only a temporary fix. Hagrid suggested that Jacob's sibling ask Professor Severus Snape about how to brew the antidote, although he also reminded them that the other five Billywigs were still on the loose and might be able to sting others. Jacob's sibling suggested that they could talk to Snape while Hagrid continued to look for the other Billywigs, to which Hagrid agreed. Hagrid also suggested that Jacob's sibling should bring another Billywig with them just in case, as Billywigs were drawn to others of their species and could thus signal the presence of another Billywig by buzzing and then flying towards them, potentially helping them locate the missing Billywigs. Jacob's sibling revealed that they had befriended this Billywig, which they agreed to bring with them to the Potions Classroom.[1]
Upon collecting this Billywig from the Magical Creatures Reserve and reaching the Potions Classroom, Jacob's sibling attempted to ask Snape for help, but the professor simply attempted to ignore their pleas. However, upon Jacob's sibling stating that they were looking for help brewing an antidote to Billywig stings, Snape suddenly became interested. Jacob's sibling noticed that Snape had not criticised them or told them to leave and that the professor had only responded to their questions with a few short words, but Snape insisted that he was fine and asked them to tell him about what had happened to Fang. Upon being informed of the urgency of the need to brew the antidote, Snape agreed to help Jacob's sibling brew the antidote, but let slip that he thought it was a good plan, confusing Jacob's sibling once again. Having picked up that something was wrong regarding Snape's behaviour, Jacob's sibling theorised that Snape had been stung by a Billywig himself and that the giddiness was getting to him, explaining why he became more interested at the mention of the antidote. Although Snape attempted to deny this, he eventually was forced to admit that he too had been stung by one of the escaped Billywigs. He revealed that he had already lowered himself from the floating with the Descending Charm, but complained that the giddiness made it too hard to focus. Jacob's sibling offered to help Snape brew the antidote to help cure both Snape and Fang, although Snape was annoyed that they had brought a Billywig into his classroom despite a Billywig being responsible for his condition. After Jacob's sibling asserted that this Billywig would not interfere and would keep its distance, Snape agreed to help them brew the antidote, although he asserted that they could tell no one about his affliction.[1]
However, at that moment, this Billywig started to buzz and flew away from the Potions Classroom. Although Snape was initially relieved to see the Billywig leave, Jacob's sibling informed him that this indicated that another Billywig was located nearby, potentially the one that had initially stung him. Jacob's sibling suggested that they should recapture the escaped Billywig first before anyone else was stung, to which Snape begrudgingly agreed. Jacob's sibling followed this Billywig to the Training Grounds, where they found Penny Haywood, Barnaby Lee, and Ismelda Murk floating, having already been stung by another Billywig. After using the Descending Charm to bring them down, Penny revealed that the three of them had been putting away broomsticks after Flying Class at the request of Professor Rolanda Hooch when they suddenly started floating, with Jacob's sibling informing them that they had been stung by a Billywig. After informing them of the situation, Jacob's sibling attempted to look for the escaped Billywig. However, Ismelda briefly stopped them, believing that a wild Billywig loose at Hogwarts sounded "like a right good time" and questioned the harm of allowing it to remain free, with Barnaby agreeing that it might be funny to see one of their more stern professors, such as Professors Minerva McGonagall and Severus Snape, get stung. Although Jacob's sibling agreed that the floating could be funny, they revealed that, if the victim turned out to be allergic, the floating could become permanent, thus necessitating them to brew the antidote as quickly as possible. However, they asserted that they first needed to find the Billywig that had stung Penny, Barnaby, and Ismelda.[1]
At that moment, this Billywig alerted them to the escaped Billywig, which was flying high above them. Penny suggested that Jacob's sibling should use one of the remaining brooms to fly up and catch the Billywig, as they were the Seeker for their house's Quidditch team. After a brief chase, Jacob's sibling managed to recapture the escaped Billywig in a jar. However, upon attempting to call their Billywig to return to Snape to help brew the antidote, they noticed that this Billywig had completely disappeared. Although Jacob's sibling initially suggested that it had simply found another Billywig, Ismelda revealed that she had seen Jae Kim snatch this Billywig while they were chasing the other Billywig. Jacob's sibling realised that Jae might be trying to sell this Billywig on the black market, likely being aware of their value, and decided to go to Knockturn Alley in an attempt to prevent Jae from selling it.[1]
Upon reaching Knockturn Alley, Jacob's sibling found Jae about to sell this Billywig to a dark wizard. Before he could do so, Jacob's sibling informed Jae that the Billywig he had stolen was one of their creatures, shocking Jae, who asserted that he would never knowingly steal one of their creatures. Jae called off the deal at Jacob's sibling's request, but the dark wizard immediately attempted to take this Billywig anyway, asserting that he would not give up the Billywig without a fight. Although Jacob's sibling attempted to diffuse the situation, the dark wizard refused to back down, resulting in a duel between the two of them. Jacob's sibling eventually managed to defeat the dark wizard, who relented and allowed them to keep this Billywig. Jacob's sibling apologised to Jae for potentially ruining his business with the wizard, but Jae responded that the wizard was simply passionate about a good deal and would eventually return for business. Now having reclaimed this Billywig, Jacob's sibling returned to the Potions Classroom to help Professor Snape brew the antidote.[1]
Upon returning to the Potions Classroom, Jacob's sibling informed Snape that they had recaptured the Billywig that had stung him, though Snape still attempted to force this Billywig away from him in order to avoid a potential second sting. Snape revealed that he had gathered the materials necessary to brew the antidote, with Jacob's sibling stating that they needed to brew enough for him, Fang, and the three others who had been stung, somewhat surprising Snape. The two then proceeded to brew the antidote, with Snape overseeing and instructing Jacob's sibling on the proper brewing method. Once they had finished, Snape complained about the antidote's quality but still took it anyway, curing himself of his Billywig sting affliction. Now confident that the antidote worked, Jacob's sibling returned to Hagrid's Hut with some of the antidote to help cure Fang.[1]
Upon returning to Hagrid's Hut, Jacob's sibling found Fang floating once again, as the Descending Charm had already worn off. Hagrid claimed that Fang had been alright for a while after Jacob's sibling left, but the spell effects had recently worn off and that Fang was now in danger of floating out of the hut's door. After giving Hagrid a bottle of the antidote, Hagrid managed to grab Fang and feed him the antidote, finally curing him of his Billywig sting affliction. Jacob's sibling then revealed that they had managed to recapture one of the escaped Billywigs, with Hagrid stating that he had also recaptured a further two Billywigs. However, Hagrid stated that they were still missing two Billywigs, both of which he claimed they were likely to never recapture due to their quick movements and their desirability to other witches and wizards. However, Jacob's sibling was quick to convince Hagrid to keep up the search, although the pair weren't sure where to begin looking. At that moment, this Billywig started to buzz, indicating that it had once again located an escaped Billywig. After allowing this Billywig to leave from the hut, Jacob's sibling and Hagrid followed it to the Desert Dunes biome of the Magical Creatures Reserve.[1]
Upon arriving at the Desert Dunes, Jacob's sibling and Hagrid encountered Jae, who had been stung by both of the remaining escaped Billywigs and was now floating above them. Before they helped Jae down, Jacob's sibling questioned why he seemed to be everywhere the Billywigs were, with Hagrid further commenting that it looked like Jae was attempting to capture and sell Billywigs on the black market. Jacob's sibling and Hagrid decided to allow Jae to explain himself first before they brought him down, with Jae claiming that he had stolen the other two Billywigs in addition to this Billywig prior to fully understanding the situation. Jae claimed that he had them when Jacob's sibling met him in Knockturn Alley and planed to keep them, but, desiring to remain worthy of the trust that Jacob's sibling had placed in him, tried to sneak into the reserve in order to return the Billywigs before Jacob's sibling could notice, although the two Billywigs managed to sting him instead. Upon accepting his explanation, Jacob's sibling used the Descending Charm to return a thankful Jae back to the ground.[1]
Hagrid then calculated that, with the two Billywigs Jae had caught and the four further Billywigs that he and Jacob's sibling had caught, they had recaptured six Billywigs, with Jacob's sibling realising that that meant they had recaptured all of the escaped Billywigs. Hagrid thanked Jacob's sibling for their help with recapturing the swarm, particularly due to their aid in convincing Jae to return his two Billywigs, although Jacob's sibling gave credit to the group of them instead. Hagrid happily noticed that the Billywig swarm, in addition to this Billywig, were happily buzzing together, finally being reunited in their new home. The remaining antidote was given to Jae, Penny, Barnaby, and Ismelda, thus helping cure them of their Billywig sting afflictions.[1]
