Cornelius Fudge wearing a bowler

"Oh, you may not think I'm pretty,
But don't judge on what you see,
I'll eat myself if you can find a smarter hat than me.
You can keep your bowlers black;
Your top hats sleek and tall,
For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat
And I can cap them all.
"
— The Hogwarts Sorting Hat's song from 1991[src]

A bowler (also called a derby in the United States) was a type of hat with a domed top and a narrow, slightly-upturned brim.[1]

History[]

In 1926, Man-Hat-On Milliners for Wizards ran an advertisement in the The New York Ghost noting the many hat styles they sold, including "derbys."[2]

In 1991, the Sorting Hat sang a song to welcome students to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, which included the line "You can keep your bowlers black."[3]

Cornelius Fudge was noted to have worn a lime-green bowler during his tenure as Minister for Magic in the 1990s.[4][5][6][7][8][9]

Alastor Moody wore a bowler hat to disguise himself as a Muggle in London, and also mainly to cover up his magical eye.[10][11]
