- "Scales are used to precisely weigh potion ingredients."
- — Description[src]
Brass scales were tools used by wizards and witches to weigh quantities of potion ingredients.[1] They were essential for Potions class, and are mandatory for all first year Hogwarts students.[2][1]
Brass scales were not as precise as silver scales. Brass scales were sold at Wiseacre's Wizarding Equipment for 3 galleons each.[1]
History[]
During Harry Potter's first trip to Diagon Alley on 31 July 1991, Hagrid allowed him to pick out a nice set of scales, after stopping him from picking out a Gold Cauldron because the school Shopping List specified a Pewter Cauldron.[2]
A set of brass scales were owned by a Gryffindor student while at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. They left them behind after a Charms class with Professor Flitwick, and put up a notice on the Gryffindor pasteboard. Harry Potter, Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger later found them and returned them, earning ten house points.[3]
While Draco Malfoy was repairing the Vanishing Cabinet inside the Room of Requirement, Gregory Goyle, disguised as a little girl, dropped some brass scales, making a loud noise that alerted Malfoy not to come out.[4][5]
