- New student: "I received your owl. What happened with Ominis?"
- Sebastian Sallow: "I told him none of us will be able to avoid Dark Magic forever, so the more we know about Salazar Slytherin and the Dark Arts, the better prepared we'll be. Unfortunately, only a Gaunt knows the location of the scriptorium's entrance and Ominis won't tell me."
- — Sebastian and his friend shortly before persuading Ominis to open the Scriptorium[src]
This break-in occurred during the 1890–1891 school year, in which Sebastian Sallow and the new fifth-year student, with the help of Ominis Gaunt, accessed Slytherin's Scriptorium.[1]
Background[]
Before the 1890s, Ominis Gaunt's aunt, Noctua Gaunt, had accessed the Scriptorium hoping to uncover the secrets of Salazar Slytherin and put an end to the pure-blood supremacy and practice of the Dark Arts within her family. She had died within the Scriptorium, unable to advance into the final chamber. By appealing to Ominis's desire to learn the truth of his aunt's death, Sebastian Sallow and their mutual friend gained access to the Scriptorium by lighting three braziers within the Dungeons.[1]
Events[]
The trio descended down a staircase into a chamber. Their first obstacle was a door that required Parseltongue to pass, which was useful for Ominis, as he could speak the language and let his friends through.[1]
After this, they traversed through a large maze, finding various scattered notes that had been left by Noctua Gaunt within her final days. They had to unriddle various Slytherin Locks that opened portcullises. These locks were timed dials with an animated snake that would strike the face of the one who failed to solve its puzzle, or otherwise allow them entry. Noctua Gaunt's notes indicated that she had been struck before, but eventually managed to exit the maze.[1]
At last, the trio met the final obstacle – a door that required the use of the Cruciatus Curse to pass – along with the bones of Noctua Gaunt, who had nobody to cast the curse on. Ominis was disgusted by the scene, as he had a deeply traumatic history when it came to the curse, but also because he was processing the manner of his aunt's death, face-to-face with her skeleton. Thus, he implored Sebastian or their friend to use it on one another. Either Sebastian or their friend used it, entering the chamber.[1]
Within the heart of Slytherin's Scriptorium, their friend found Slytherin's Spellbook and Slytherin's Diary, which mentioned his rivalry with Godric Gryffindor, a creature and a chamber. They presented the book to Sebastian, who took it eagerly, while Ominis simply wanted to leave the chamber as quickly as possible.[1]
