"This is a beautiful set to be sure! The craftsmanship is quite exquisite but there's a slight hitch. Only 96.87% of the pieces are accounted for... This set is missing a Queen!"
— Murphy McNully[src]

This chess set was the personal Wizard's Chess set of Brian Gagwilde, a former Headmaster of Hogwarts.[2]

Description[]

This was an exquisitely crafted Wizard's Chess set, with a red, black, and gold chessboard and red and gold chess pieces.[2]

The chess pieces were unusually stubborn and difficult to control, with the queen in particular demanding that the other pieces show her respect and bow to her before moving, something the other pieces didn't like, which caused strife amongst the chess pieces. Aberforth Dumbledore commented that it would take an unusually skilled chess player to control Gagwilde's army.[2]

History[]

Brian Gagwilde obtained this chess set some time before before 1989, possibly whilst he was Headmaster of Hogwarts. At one point after 1899, he played a game of chess with Aberforth Dumbledore, the barman of the Hog's Head Inn, and lost spectacularly. Aberforth kept the queen as a memento of when he beat Gagwilde, leaving the chess set without a queen.

At some point before or during the 1988–1989 school year, Jae Kim tracked down the chess set. When Jacob's sibling contacted them asking if they knew where they could find a chess set, Jae brought it to the kitchens, where it was confiscated by Pitts. When Jacob's sibling and Murphy McNully arrived, Jae told them that Pitts had confiscated it and was watching over it. The three then organised a way to distract Pitts whilst Murphy grabbed the chess set. Upon finding the chess set, Murphy immediately realised it was missing a queen. Jacob's sibling and Murphy decided to find out who the chess set belonged to and so brought it to Minerva McGonagall, who immediately recognised it as Brian Gagwilde's set. Upon learning that Gagwilde had forfeited his queen to Aberforth, Jacob's sibling eventually tracked down the piece and recovered it from Aberforth, reuniting the queen with the rest of the pieces. Either Badeea Ali or Jacob's sibling used this chess set when practising for the Walter Aragon Wizard Chess Competition and eventually used the pieces in the competition.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

  • If the player hasn't completed the Year 2 achievement A Celebration of Hogwarts Teachers and been given a chess set by McGonagall, they will instead be looking for a chess set for themselves, with Badeea already owning a chess set but never using it.

  1. J. K. Rowling stated at the Edinburgh Book Festival on 15 August 2004 (source) that all portraits at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry are of deceased individuals. Thus, Gagwilde must have died sometime in or before the 1989–1990 school year, given his portrait's appearance in the Marble Staircase in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery.
