Brilliant Event An Imperfect Love badge WU

An Imperfect Love was the name given to an event of the Calamity.[1]

Adversaries Event: Gilderoy Lockhart and Slytherin's Basilisk[]

Part I (February 9th - February 16th, 2021)[]

Brilliant Event An Imperfect Love I

Once again, Harry has no recollection of causing a surge that appears to be made up of his memories. Is he subconsciously manipulating the Calamity? Or is someone else courting the Calamity, just in time for Valentine's Day?[1]

Brilliant Changing Room[]

"Harry! I'm glad I caught you. We're getting reports of new modified surge behaviour. Have you been manipulating the Calamity again?"
Constance Pickering[src]
"No... At least, not intentionally. There's always the possibility that, like the last surge, I may have unknowingly done so... But I'm still not entirely convinced that's something I'm even capable of."
Harry Potter[src]
"I'm confused. You said it yourself that the last surge was definitely composed of your memories. Considering that this one appears to be centered around Hermione and Ron, doesn't it seem likely that it is too? What other explanation could there possibly be?"
Constance Pickering[src]
"That does seem the logical explanation, doesn't it? Yet I can't help but feel that this isn't as cut and dry as it appears..."
Harry Potter[src]
"Perhaps if we investigate this surge, we'll be able to get a more definitive answer about whether or not you subconsciously created it and, if so, why this keeps happening."

Brilliant Quidditch Fan Hermione Granger WU
Brilliant Quidditch Fan Hermione Granger Despite her relative indifference for Quidditch, Hermione Granger attended Gryffindor Quidditch events to support her friends. This included Ron Weasley's trial for Keeper, where she was rumored to have played a role in his admittance to the team. Though she denied using magic to sabotage Ron's rivals, Hermion was a vocal supporter in the stands, rewriting a derogatory "Weasley is Our King" chant into a rallying cry for the young Keeper.
Harry Potter: "Funny story, at Ginny and I's wedding, a few of my friends and former classmates admitted that they wondered if Hermione and I would end up together.
Hermione's a great friend. I probably wouldn't be here now if not for her. But we never would have worked out. Ron's a much better complement for her.
"
Constance Pickering: "Speaking of Hermione, have you talked to her recently? Seems she barely leaves her office these days."
Harry Potter: "Apparently she's working on an important project and doesn't want to be disturbed. I tried prodding her for details, but she was very secretive about it."
Constance Pickering: "I'd bet my wand she's working on something for Ron for Valentine's Day. She always did strike me as the secretly romantic type."
— Discussion[src]
Brilliant Quidditch Keeper Ron WU
Brilliant Quidditch Keeper Ron Ron Weasley was appointed the Gryffindor Quidditch team's Keeper by Angelina Johnson. Although his Quidditch career had a rocky start, through practice and perseverance, he managed to turn it around and become a proficient player in his own right. This prompted Gryffindor fans to repurpose the derogatory "Weasley is Our King" song into one that sung Ron's praises.
Ronald Weasley: "Harry, something odd just happened to me. Hermione warned me against taking her to the Three Broomsticks for Valentine's Day again."
Harry Potter: "There's nothing odd about that, Ron. You've subjected Hermione to the Three Broomsticks five years in a row. I'm surprised she hasn't Transfigured you into a toad by now."
Ronald Weasley: "I thought it was romantic...
At any rate, Hermione's message isn't what's odd. What's odd is how I received it. Remember when I could suddenly recall a conversation with Grim that I couldn't possibly have had? It was like that, like someone had mucked about in my head.
"
Harry Potter: "It sounds like Hermione implanted a false memory in your Foundable. But that shouldn't be possible, unless..."
— Discussion[src]
Crookshanks WU
Crookshanks Crookshanks was Hermione Granger's pet during her time at Hogwarts. Part cat, part Kneazle, and by all accounts grumpy, he was said to have been uncharacteristically intelligent and cognizant. This is perhaps best evidenced in the role he played in revealing Ron Weasley's pet rat, Scabbers, as Peter Pettigrew in his Animagus form.
Harry Potter: "You know the adage about pets and their owners resembling each other? A case could be made for Hermione and Crookshanks, at least from a personality perspective."
Harry Potter: "Crookshanks was incredibly smart and perceptive. A bit stubborn and bossy, perhaps, but affectionate to and protective of those he cared about."
Harry Potter: "He was always after Ron's "rat", Scabbers. Of course, it turned out that Crookshanks had good reason for that. But at the time, I couldn't help but laugh at how much it reminded me of Hermione and Ron's own dynamic."

Cormac McLaggen WU
Cormac McLaggen Cormac McLaggen was a Gryffindor student and an avid Quidditch fan. Though he missed tryouts in his sixth year after eating a pound of Doxy eggs on a bet and was beat out for the Keeper position by Ron Weasley in his seventh year, he eventually took to the pitch during Ron's hospitalization. However, his poor teamwork - which led to Gryffindor's worst and most embarrassing loss ever - resulted in him being permanently benched.
Harry Potter: "I don't think these Foundables are made up of my memories. When I create a surge, I always feel a sense of wholeness every time a Foundable is returned. Like I've been reunited with a missing piece of myself.
But we've returned multiple Foundables now and... nothing. I can't say I feel the sense of unease that comes from having a memory stolen by the Calamity either.
"
Constance Pickering: "Curious... Is it possible these memories are so minor that you didn't notice them being snatched and returned?"
Harry Potter: "This is the Calamity we're talking about, so I'm reluctant to dismiss the idea outright. It's certainly true I haven't thought about Cormac in years. But I think the more likely explanation is that this isn't my surge."
Constance Pickering: "But if you're not the one influencing the Calamity, who is? And why are they interested in your friends and schoolmates?"
— Discussion[src]
Lavender Brown WU
Lavender Brown Lavender Brown was a Gryffindor student at Hogwarts. During her sixth year, she became romantically entangled with Ron Weasley. Sadly for Lavender, the relationshio was mostly one-sided, with ron largely dating her to make Hermione Granger jealous. Lavender eventually ended things with Ron after correctly deducing his feelings for Hermione. A member of Dumbledore's Army, she tagically died during the Battle of Hogwarts.
Harry Potter: "Lavender Brown... I haven't thought about her in some time. She and Ron dated in sixth year, you know. Hermione would get so flustered whenever they snogged in public.
Looking back, I think that's probably when Hermione realised just how much she cared about Ron.
"
Constance Pickering: "So it's not an exaggeration then to say that Hermione's memories of Lavender Brown are an integral part of her and Ron's history as a couple?"
Harry Potter: "I suppose you could say that, couldn't you? Come to think of it, all these Foundables could be tied back to Hermione and Ron's relationship in some way..."
Constance Pickering: "Either the Valentine's season's got the Calamity feeling romantic or there's something more to this surge we're not yet seeing..."
— Discussion[src]
"Harry, I did it! I manipulated the Calamity and started this surge. It took longer than I'd hoped to sort the magic out, but I finally did it."
Hermione Granger[src]
"That's brilliant, Hermione! Though I don't know why I'm surprised. If anyone's capable of it, it's you."
Harry Potter[src]
"You were right though - it isn't easy. I thought the Patronus Charm was difficult, but this is on an entirely different level. Still, it was worth the effort. Adversaries prove The Unforgivable are growing stronger. Combatting their influence on the Calamity is only going to get harder. At least now I can help."
Hermione Granger[src]
"You don't know how appreciative I am of that. We have reason to believe multiple members of The Unforgivable can manipulate the Calamity. It'll be good to have another person on our side who can."
Harry Potter[src]
"Though I think I'll try to guide the next wave in a less... personal direction. The Valentine's Day fervor had me convinced that pulling memories of Ron and I's early days was a good idea. But now that it's on display for the whole world... Well, to say it's embarrassing is a bit of an understatement, isn't it?"
Hermione Granger[src]

Adversaries Event: Aragog[]

Part II (February 23rd - March 2nd, 2021)[]

Brilliant Event An Imperfect Love II

When Hermione's surge gets hijacked by The Unforgivable, the team make a startling conclusion about their ability to manipulate the Calamity. What is the cabal trying to say with their surge?[1]

Brilliant Malfoy Manor II[]

"SOS Task Force agents are reporting my surge has returned, but something's wrong. They're indicating it's become Dark and oppressive, rife with Foundables related to Voldemort and Bellatrix Lestrange... Essentially, the polar opposite of the direction I'd intended to take the surge in."
Hermione Granger[src]
"As if it's become another surge altogether, eh? Say, Harry, do you think this is like when you wrenched control of November's surge away, but in reverse?"
Constance Pickering[src]
"I think that's exactly what's happening here, Constance. The Unforgivable must be trying to guide the Calamity back in their intended direction."
Harry Potter[src]
"I agree. But if they wanted control of the Calamity, why wait until halfway through my surge to seize it? Why not preempt it, like you did?"
Hermione Granger[src]
"Perhaps we'll find some answers hidden inside this troubling surge."
Constance Pickering[src]
Images Name Description Remarks
An Imperfect Love Bellatrix Lestrange
Brilliant Portrait of Bellatrix Lestrange Arguably Voldemort's most loyal follower, Bellatrix Lestrange's devotion to the Dark Lord ran deeper than mere allegiance to his cause. Those who had the displeasure of knowing her describe her ruthless obsessive pursuit of her master's love and adoration. Though it's unknown if he reciprocated her feelings, it's rumored that she may have bore him an heir prior to her death.
Constance Pickering: "The more of this surge I experience, the more convinced I become that this must be related to Adversaries.
Lethifold did write in the letter we intercepted back in October that they were trying to "bring them back". If "them" truly are the Death Eaters, this could be a part of their plan.
"
Hermione Granger: "That is the most reasonable conclusion to draw, isn't it? Still, I can't help but feel that, more than anything, this surge was intended to make a mockery of mine. Granted, I may very well feel that way because they interrupted me personally, but hear me out.
I based my surge on my memories of Ron and I's early relationship which, despite its admittedly rocky start, was built on genuine love. Theirs seems to be centered on Voldemort and Bellatrix's obsessive, self-serving relationship. It's as if they took my core construct of love and tainted it.
"
Constance Pickering: "I hope you're right. If not, it would likely mean that The Unforgivable are actively trying to revive the Darkness of Voldemort and Bellatrix and, well... I don't really need to state how terrible that would be, do I?"
— Discussion[src]
An Imperfect Love Lord Voldemort WU
Brilliant Portrait of Voldemort Cold, ruthless and pragmatic, Lord Voldemot was widely believed to be incapable of love. He did, however, at least value Bellatrix Lestrange, as evidenced by his trust in her and the rage he exhibited during the Battle of Hogwarts when he learned of her demise at the hands of Molly Weasley.
Harry Potter: "Constance, the memories fuelling this surge... they're mine."
Constance Pickering: "You're sure? Not to question your judgement, but we have been wrong about these things in the past."
Harry Potter: "I'm positive. I feel the same as I do when new Adversaries are summoned: like someone's flipping through an open book of my memories and ripping pages out, emotions and all..."
Constance Pickering: "So The Unforgivable are able to snatch others' memories to create both Adversaries and surges? Bloody hell! Seems every time we take one step forwards towards getting the Calamity under relative control, they take two."
Harry Potter: "I wouldn't be surprised if they were responsible for the surge I thought I unknowingly started last month too. But what are they hoping to achieve and why do they keep targeting me? Is it my history with Voldemort and his Death Eaters? My position? Or something else entirely?"
— Discussion[src]
Dark Mark WU
Morsmordre Dark Mark During the First Wizarding War, Death Eaters would cast this symbol into the sky with Morsmordre spell, whereupon billowing green smoke would form the iconic skull and snake. This warned that an act of aggression had been committed on the premises. The spell is said to have been a creation be Voldemort himself.
Hermione Granger: "The Dark Mark was more than a symbol of allegiance to Voldemort and a way for him to communicate with his Death Eaters. It was a threat, a warning intended to inspire fear."
Hermione Granger: "Voldemort weaponised fear in his quest for power. He used violence to intimidate any who disagreed with him into silence or submission."
Hermione Granger: "I wonder... Could The Unforgivable be trying to do the same to us?"
— Discussion[src]
Mass Breakout from Azkaban Daily Prophet Issue WU
Mass Break Out Azkaban Daily Prophet This issue of the Daily Prophet from 1996 details the escape of ten Death Eaters from Azkaban prison. Perhaps most notable among them was Bellatrix Lestrange. The article includes quotes from the then Minister for Magic, Cornelius Fudge, who blamed the escape on Sirius Black. Since this time, the Ministry has recanted and corrected these statements.
Constance Pickering: "While most Death Eaters denied their ties to Voldemort after his initial fall, Bellatrix Lestrange proudly proclaimed hers. She rotted in Azkaban for fifteen years, apparently always believing Voldemort would return for her."
Constance Pickering: "I know Bellatrix was a horrible person and her infatuation with Voldemort was likely extremely unhealthy, but... Is it odd that I admire her devotion?"
Constance Pickering: "After all, I get antsy when Lucas is thirty minutes late for our dinner reservation. I can't imagine waiting for fifteen years with only Dementors for company."

An Imperfect Love Sword of Gryffindor Replica
Sword of Gryffindor Replica This replica of the Sword of Gryffindor was put in place by Albus Dumbledore prior to his death. Dumbledore had intended to leave the real sword to Harry Potter in his will, but, correctly predicting that the Ministry would confiscate it, bestowed him this replica instead. Believing it to be the genuine artifact, the replica was moved from Hogwarts to the Lestrange family vault at Gringotts after some members of Dumbledore's Army attempted to recover it. Bellatrix Lestrange then proudly guarded it for her master.
Harry Potter: "I've long believed that Voldemort was incapable of love. It seemed the best explanation for why my mother's sacrifice mystified him so much.
But he clearly felt something for Bellatrix. You need only look at how special he treated her to see that. And that's saying nothing of the fact that he entrusted her not only with what he thought was the real Sword of Gryffindor but also one of his Horcruxes.
"
Harry Potter: "Dumbledore once told me that Voldemort couldn't understand love. That he took no trouble to comprehend that which he didn't value. So perhaps it's not that Voldemort was incapable of love, but that love was such a foreign concept to him that he dismissed it as unimportant.
It's ironic. For all his attempts to obtain power, he failed to see the single greatest source of it, despite it being right in front of him.

Mysterious Note[]

Name Remarks
1st piece
"Curious, there was a piece of a note attached to that last Foundable, though it's too fragmented to make anything out."
Constance Pickering[src]
"I had a hunch that The Unforgivable were trying to send us a message, but I didn't think it'd be quite so literal."
Hermione Granger[src]
"Makes you wonder what it says, doesn't it?"
Constance Pickering[src]
"We'll have to assemble the rest of the pieces before we can know for certain, but I suspect it's nothing good."
Hermione Granger[src]
5nd piece
"We haven't found enough pieces of the note to make out most of its contents yet, but one thing is clear - the writer wanted you to read it, Harry. It's addressed specifically to you."
Hermione Granger[src]
"Considering how many memories of mine they've snatched and twisted into Adversaries, I wouldn't be surprised if it's a thank you note. You'd think, after more than two decades, I'd be a better Occlumens. I wish I'd kept up with my lessons..."
Harry Potter[src]
"There's more. I believe this was written by Lethifold. I can't be completely certain as the note we intercepted from them was written in a runic script, but, upon comparison, the spacing, sharpness, and slope of the letters all seem to match."
Hermione Granger[src]
"Certainly adds more credibility to our running theory that Lethifold and Barghest are members of The Unforgivable, doesn't it? Now if we could only find out who they are, we might finally get a tangible lead on the cabal."
Harry Potter[src]
Final piece
"Harry, we've managed to reassemble the entire note and it's... well, to be frank, it's dreadful. The Unforgivable are advising that we "ought to stop meddling with the Calamity". If we do, they promise to leave us be and "forgive our past transgressions"."
Constance Pickering[src]
"And if we don't?"
Harry Potter[src]
"They don't make any specific threats, but they do say that we'll "learn a valuable lesson about actions having consequences"."
Constance Pickering[src]
"We've managed to stamp out their surge, but The Unforgivable's threat remains. Harry, what are we going to do about their demand to stop interfering with the Calamity?"
Hermione Granger[src]
"I say we ignore their bravado and continue doing everything in our power to stop them from abusing the Calamity. The fact that they reached out to us directly means they're worried. They know we're getting closer to exposing their identities.
If we continue to press them, there's a good chance they'll become increasingly desperate and, in their desperation, get sloppy.
"
Harry Potter[src]
"Or they'll be driven to take more extreme actions to stop us. Let's not forget what they've proven themselves to be capable of. Curse-breakers were able to free Kit Gerrard from the painting, but the Healers at St Mungo's haven't been able to restore any of Kit or the informant's memories."
Hermione Granger[src]
"Don't worry, Hermione. If there's one thing this surge has made me realise, it's that we've faced worse threats before and survived. I'm confident we'll do it again."
