Baby Beasts was the name given to an event of the Calamity.[1]
Brilliant Hagrid's Hut Interior[]
- "Constance, the Ministry's internal Calamity Management Team reported that there appears to be yet another surge in Calamity activity. And it's rather ominous. The Calamity is focused almost exclusively on snatching baby beasts."
- — Hermione Granger[src]
- "Baby beasts? How dreadful!"
- — Constance Pickering[src]
- "It's horrid. Grim can't be behind this, can he? Stealing baby beasts is incredibly irresponsible. We don't know what kind of harm becoming a Foundable can do to an innocent baby."
- — Hermione Granger[src]
- "I can't imagine he'd do something so irresponsible... Of course, he probably did start the Calamity..."
- — Constance Pickering[src]
- "We need to return the babies as quickly as possible. There's no time to lose."
- — Hermione Granger[src]

Brilliant Baby Norwegian Ridgeback | The Norwegian Ridgeback Dragon is most physically similar to the Hungarian Horntail, differing primarily due to its eponymous black ridges. It has venomous fangs and feed on large land and water mammals (unusual for a Dragon). Infants are known for their quick aptitude for fire-breathing. |
| |
Brilliant Baby Niffler | Nifflers are adorable hoarders of anything shiny. Do not be fooled however, their fur and friendly demeanour hide an incredible urge to steal. Inadvisable as pets due to their tendency to burrow, they are regularly deployed be the Curse-Breakers at Gringotts. |
| |
Baby Niffler Cage | Nifflers, despite their cute appearance as infants, are notoriously hard to keep in one place. They have been known to slip through even the smallest point of egress. To this end it is advised strongly to keep them in an enchanted cage and distracted with gold as seen here. |
| |
Augurey Baby | The Augurey, known also as the Irish-Phoenix, is a shy magical bird with black-green feathers. Despite their timid nature many Wizards over the years have raised Augurey as life-long companions. Newt Scamander famously rescued an Augurey named Patrick. |
| |
Baby Crup | The Crup is almost identical to a standard Jack Russell Terrier, expect for its distinctive forked tail. They are particularly aggressive toward Muggles and extremely loyal to Wizards, making them popular pets. Crups are great scavengers, known for their capacity to eat almost anything. Groups of Crups are called a "pack". | ||
Baby Knarl | Knarls resemble a common garden Hedgehog in such an indistinguishable manner that they live in most Muggle gardens. Knarls differ only in the way they react to gifts. While it is common practice to leave a saucer of milk as a gift to a Hedgehog, doing the same for a Knarl will result in the destruction of the owner's garden. Many a Muggle child has been wrongly accused of this Knarl-caused destruction. |

- "We've tamped down the surge a bit — for now. But I've been thinking about that Niffler cage... Perhaps this entire surge is a message from Grim? It is so incredibly specific."
- — Hermione Granger[src]
- "All the creatures the surge focused on are incredibly valuable — even the Augurey is in demand... Maybe there's a hint in there somewhere?"
- — Constance Pickering[src]
- "Perhaps... I just can't imagine what it is..."
- — Hermione Granger[src]
- "Regardless, it might be worth spending some time thinking... We have a few days to connect the dots before the inevitable “second surge” comes in. If Grim is sending us a message, what is it?"
- — Constance Pickering[src]
Brilliant Black Lake Shore[]
- "A second Calamity surge is starting — similar to the first, focused solely around baby beasts... It just all seems so incredibly specific... Moreso than any other surge we've encountered. The more I think about it, the more I am convinced this is a message from Grim."
- — Hermione Granger[src]
- "But what is he saying? Is he being held in a zoo? Or an animal sanctuary?"
- — Constance Pickering[src]
- "Or a suitcase, like Newt Scamander's? I have literally no idea. We should keep trying to solve that little mystery while we return these babies to their rightful places. If this is a message from Grim Fawley, it's wrapped in a rather cruel package!"

Brilliant Baby Hippogriff | Baby Hippogriff are remarkable in the wizarding world for their fast hatching time and ability to fly from an early age. They proud creatures and can be quite dangerous when untamed. If looking to have one as a pet or companion, some advise starting when Hippogriff is young — when they are more likely to accept and embrace your presence willingly. |
| |
Brilliant Baby Unicorn | Baby Unicorn could, one some rare occasions, be found in and around the Forbidden Forest at Hogwarts Castle. They reside throughout Europe, living peaceful lives in forests. Baby Unicorn are a Golden colour and at a distance their lack of a horn could allow them to be mistaken for an ordinary foal. |
| |
Baby Demiguise | Elusive and nigh-impossible to catch except by those specifically trained to act unpredictably. The Baby Demiguise highly resembles its adult counterpart (except for being significantly smaller). Given their tiny size, invisibility and precognitive sight, infants can be one of the hardest creatures to document for any Magizoologist. They are, however, surprisingly friendly under the correct circumstances. |
| |
Baby Grindylow | Baby Grindylow, sometimes known as "Grypts" in their infant form, are less aggressive than their full grown counterparts. As Grindylow age they become more dangerous and are not to be trifled with. They are not recommended as pets. |
| |
Baby Horned Serpent |
This is the infant of the North American Horned Serpent. At this early stage the Horns have yet to curl round and behind the serpents' skull. The young serpents are fast and easily mistaken at a glance for normal snakes. Also of note is their prized jewels have only just begun to harden out of their scales into precious gems. |
| |
Giant Squid Tentacle | Giant Squids are known to the Muggle community, but their magical nature remains hidden to this day. A semi-domesticated Giant Squid inhabits the Black Lake on the grounds of Hogwarts Castle. Many rumours have sprung up over the years regarding this unusual Squid, most of which are untrue or exaggerated. His presence in the fresh water lake is testament to his magical nature. |

- "I asked a friend of mine in Magical Law Enforcement — Dorian Fungbury — to do some digging into illegal beast trading. Apparently, since the Calamity, the Ministry pulled recource away from combating the black market.
He reached out to some underworld contacts and found that the black market — particularly the illegal Magical Creature market in Indonesia — has utterly exploded. I think Grim Fawley knew this." - — Hermione Granger[src]
- "And he was using these surges to inform us about this... Brilliant...
You know, for him to be aware of this increase in smuggling it means he must be someplace where he can access this information..." - — Constance Pickering[src]
- "Brilliant observation, Constance. I think maybe we should spend some time looking into that. In the meantime, the Ministry has allocated new resources to deal with the menace of black market beast trading, so we all owe Grim a debt of gratitude."
