Darkness Rising was an event which happened during the Calamity, which resolved around people and items relating to the Dark Arts.[1]

Brilliant Knockturn Alley[]

"Constance, send an alert to all members of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force. I fear another surge in the Calamity has begun."
Harry Potter[src]
"We have noticed an uptick in Foundables of a... dodgy sort. You know, the kind of people and things that would be right at home in Knockturn Alley. But that information hasn't been made public. I haven't even told Hermione yet. How did you find out?"
Constance Pickering[src]
"This is going to sound mad, but ever since I manipulated the Calamity, I've felt oddly connected to it. It's difficult to describe how I knew a surge was coming... If I had to put it into words, I'd compare it to the feeling of electricity in the air before a summer storm."
Harry Potter[src]
"Fascinating. Can you glean any other information about the surge?"
Constance Pickering[src]
"I can tell that someone's guiding it, but specifically who. What is clear, however, is that we must put an end to the surge and return everything that's been snatched. There's something about this surge that, more than any other, fills me with such dread..."

Snatcher WU
Brilliant Snatcher Snatchers, as they were known during the Second Wizarding War, were gangs of wizards or witches looking to earn their way by hunting down Muggle-born, blood traitors and other "Undesirables" and delivering them to the Ministry under Pius Thicknesse. Working on the promise of gold, Snatchers could usually be identified by a scrap of red fabric tied around their left arm.
"Following the Battle of Hogwarts, most of the surviving Snatchers were rounded up and thrown into Azkaban. A few, however, managed to flee the country. Their whereabouts remain unknown.
It's been years since that day. For all we know, those Snatchers might be leading normal lives under new identities while the families of their victims continue to mourn the loss of their loved ones. Makes me ill just thinking about it.
"
Harry Potter[src]
Brilliant Poacher WU
Brilliant Poacher Poachers, hunters of rare, restricted or otherwise valuable creatures and their parts, are unfortunately a plague upon the Ministry. Aurors are often tasked with patrolling hidden and protected habitats in an attempt to ward off or capture these heinous criminals. Very few Aurors have gone their careers without at least on run in with a poacher who just wouldn't let their prize go...
"That reminds me... Was the Ministry able to make any headway shutting down those illegal Magical Creature markets that Grim warned us about?"
Constance Pickering[src]
"Yes, the Department of Magical Law Enforcement's managed to take several poachers like this one into custody since then."
Hermione Granger[src]
"That's good news, isn't it? So why do you sound so dour?"
Constance Pickering[src]
"According to Harry, every poacher they've found so far has had their minds almost completely Obliviated. Most can't even remember their names, let alone any information pertinent to the case."
Hermione Granger[src]
"Well that's not suspicious at all. Clearly someone doesn't want their secrets getting out."
Constance Pickering[src]
Brilliant Mulpepper’s Apothecary Sign WU
Mulpepper's Apothecary Sign The Knockturn Alley branch of Mr Mulpepper's Apothecary prides itself on its availability of rare and quality potion ingredients. Although a sign out front claims that they do not sell Unicorn blood due to its illegality, the Ministry keeps a close eye on the shop nonetheless...
"I never knew Mr Mulpepper's Apothecary had a shop in Knockturn Alley."
Hermione Granger
"I've found that most people don't, outside of witches and wizards of ill-repute. I'm only familiar with it because I was referred there once when the Diagon Alley branch ran out of Fairy wings.
Could this be a sign — pun very much intended — that whoever's manipulating the Calamity isn't above visiting a shop like this?
"
Constance Pickering[src]
Giant Black Spider WU
Giant Black Spider Not to be confused with an Acromantula, the Giant Black Spider is, as its name suggest, a rather large variety of arachnid. Both Muggle and Wizard alike have rued the day they found on of these in their homes. Rumour has it the largest specimen found grew to the size of an adult German Shepherd.
"Don't tell him I told you this, but Ron used to be quite terrified of spiders. He's gotten better about it with age, but he still asks me to take care of any spiders he finds around the house."
Hermione Granger
"They have eight legs, Hermione! Eight! No creature needs that many legs!"
Ronald Weasley[src]
Brilliant Bell Poison Candle WU
Poison candle Poisonous candles are rather insidious devices. Functionally speaking, they work the same as a regular candle, the only difference being that they emit toxic fumes when burned. The Ministry considers poisonous candles (like many items for sale Knockturn Alley) to be dangerous and warns against purchasing them for obvious reasons.
"Poisonous candles... Of all the Dark artefacts in the world, I find them particularly revolting. Imagine lighting one, expecting to envelop your home in the sweet smell of honeysuckle, only to wind up inhaling toxic fumes. Despicable.
Now that I think about it... all the Foundables in this surge have felt rather sinister, haven't they?
Why is Grim directing the Calamity in such a Dark direction? It's far from what we've come to expect from his modified surges.
Harry did theorise that if he was able to manipulate the Calamity, someone else could too. What if this isn't Grim we're dealing with?
"
Constance Pickering[src]
"Harry, Constance told me you've become attuned to the Calamity. Tell me, have you been able to use your newfound ability to communicate with Grim at all? Can you discern where he is or why he modified this surge?"
Gareth Greengrass[src]
"No, though it's certainly not from a lack of trying. The Calamity simply refuses to divulge whether Grim is truly the source of this latest surge."
Harry Potter[src]
"It sounds like you suspect that he isn't. Am I to understand that you believe someone other than Grim and yourself is able to manipulate the Calamity?"
Gareth Greengrass[src]
"Grim's previous surges have all seemed like attempts to communicate with us. This one feels different... ill-intentioned, dangerous, Dark. Grim never struck me as the type to be capable of something so malicious."
Harry Potter[src]
"Prior to Penelope's disappearance, I would have agreed with you. But Grim was desperate to find her, and desperation drives people to do things they'd never be capable of otherwise. Believe me, I, more than anyone else, want Grim to be innocent, but at some point one must be realistic."

Brilliant Borgin and Burkes[]

"Constance, I'm sensing the Calamity ramping up again. The same hand seems to be guiding it, but it feels like it's narrowed its focus. Has a second surge begun?"
Harry Potter[src]
"It appears so. This time, the surge seems centred specifically on that antique shop in Knockturn Alley, Borgin and Burkes. If I didn't know any better, I'd say the Calamity was looking for something...
Do you think Grim Fawley might be trying to tell us to investigate Borgin and Burkes?
"
Constance Pickering[src]
"It's certainly possible, but my gut is telling me that this isn't Grim's doing...
Regardless, Muggle and wizarding world alike are in danger so long as these Dark artefacts and wizards remain unchecked. We must do everything in our power to put an end to this surge quickly. With any luck, we'll get some answers in the process.

Brilliant Dark Witch Dark witches such as this one flocked to Voldemort during the Second Wizarding War. Seeking the approval and respect of the Dark Lord, they threw themselves into sinister and malevolent plots to sow chaos and disorder across the wizarding world. After Voldemort's fall, many were imprisoned in Azkaban for their crimes. Those that didn't went into hiding.
"Earlier I theorised that whoever was influencing the Calamity was likely a witch or wizard of ill-repute. Now I'm certain of it. Borgin and Burkes is dodgy even by Knockturn Alley standards. The only ones who visit there are Dark wizards and witches like this one..."
Constance Pickering[src]
"And those with nowhere else to turn. There's something you ought to know... After the search for Penelope was called off, Grim was devastated. He purchased a cursed quill from Borgin and Burkes with the intent of cursing Harry. Fortunately, I found out and I was able to talk him out of it."
Gareth Greengrass
"Merlin's beard! How am I just now hearing about this?"
Constance Pickering[src]
"Because I covered the whole incident up... No one got hurt, so I told Grim that no one need know. The poor man was beside himself with grief. He wasn't thinking straight. He'd suffered enough losing Penelope, I didn't want to see him lose his freedom and children too.
I'd hoped he'd learned from the mistake... But now I fear he's gone and done something that can't be taken back.

Brilliant Dark Wizard Dark wizards sough power through forbidden Dark magic. Realising their goals aligned, many allied themselves with Voldemort's cause. His defeat at the Battle of Hogwarts forced many Dark wizards underground, where rumours have it that they continue to plot and scheme. Aurors are urged to be on high alert for such individuals who may try to take advantage of the Calamity.
"The more I consider Grim's involvement in this surge, the more illogical the notion becomes. Grim's parents died at the hands of Death Eaters in the Second Wizarding War. Why would he influence the Calamity to snatch Dark wizards, knowing full well what they're capable of?"
Hermione Granger[src]
"It is hard to wrap your head around, isn't it? Perhaps he felt he had no choice? Or he has less control over these surges than we thought?"
Constance Pickering[src]
"I hope you're right, Constance. I shudder to think what would happen if a truly Dark wizard was able to manipulate the Calamity."
Hermione Granger[src]

Borgin Partial owner and main proprietor of Borgin and Burkes, little is known about Mr Borgin. We do know, however, he is responsible for selling Draco Malfoy the Opal Necklace used in failed attempt on Albus Dumbledore's life. Due to this fact, the Ministry has kept their eye on Mr Borgin's operation for a number of years...
"As far as Knockturn Alley denizens go, Borgin always struck me as relatively harmless. His wares, on the other hand, were quite the opposite. He even stocked a cursed necklace that he advertised as having taken the lives of nineteen Muggles.
If something like that were to fall into the wrong hands because of this surge, the consequences would be dire.

Giant Stone Hand This Giant Stone Hand is something of a mystery. Currently residing in Borgin and Burkes, it has been a feature of Knockturn Alley for many years. Its surface show no obvious chisel marks and any attempt to ascertain its origin have proven unsuccessful. It resonates with magical energy, but the exact nature of that energy remains unknown.
"The more I see of this surge, the more convinced I am that the witch or wizard behind it is after something that either is or was at Borgin and Burkes.
But what are they looking for? And, perhaps more pressingly, why do I feel so compelled to give this Giant Stone Hand a high-five?

Registry Brilliant Event Borgin and Burkes Sticker01 WU
Ominous Mask On display in Borgin and Burkes, this mask has an ominous and nefarious presence about it. Though it shouldn't be confused with the characteristic masks of the Death Eaters, it's not hard to postulate that this may have once belonged to a Dark wizard or witches.
"There's something about this mask that fills me with dread, but I can't quite put my wand on it..."
Constance Pickering[src]
"If this is what I think it is, you have a right to be nervous. Years ago, I stumbled upon information regarding an ancient cult of Dark wizards and witches that used masks like this one. Legends claim they were capable of transferring knowledge and power from generation to generation.
I thought it was a load of codswallop at the time. But now, given what we've learned about the Calamity and how one can manipulate it to snatch and implant memories... I'm not so sure.

Mysterious Note[]

Name Remarks
1st piece
"Look, the Calamity has delivered us another fragment of a note! Perhaps, once we find all the pieces, we'll get an answer as to who's behind this surge and why."
Constance Pickering[src]
5nd piece
"We've managed to recover multiple pieces of this note now, but I can't make Runespoor heads or Crup tails of what's written on it."
Constance Pickering[src]
"It looks like some sort of runic script. I don't recognise it, but I'd bet my wand Hermione here does."
Harry Potter[src]
"Curious, this appears to be a ciphered message. It seems to employ a runic alphabet of sorts..."
Hermione Granger[src]
"Will you be able to decode it once we've found all the pieces, Hermione?"
Constance Pickering[src]
"Possibly, but this code is awfully elaborate. Whoever wrote this note clearly didn't want just anyone reading it... Which begs the question, if the note wasn't intended for us — as I suspect it wasn't — who was it for?"
Hermione Granger[src]
Final piece
"It was quite a challenge, but I managed to translate your note. The contents are... troubling, to say the least. In it, “Lethifold” details to “Barghest” — both codenames, I'm assuming — how they successfully used the Calamity to obtain some artefact that had once passed through Borgin and Burkes."
Hermione Granger[src]
"It's as I feared, then. Others have discovered how to manipulate the Calamity. Did the note give any indication as to what that artefact is or what they want it for?"
Harry Potter[src]
"Lethifold mentions something about the artefact possibly being what they need to “bring them back” and “see their noble mission through.” Uncomfortably cryptic, isn't it?"
Hermione Granger[src]
"I've just recalled why “Barghest” sounded so familiar! That's what my Muggle grandad called the ghostly black dog that supposedly haunted the churchyard he lived beside. Sounds rather like our omen of death, the Grim, doesn't it? Hold on, Grim... Could this letter have been intended for Grim Fawley?"
Constance Pickering[src]
"I'll admit, it seems like more than just a coincidence. But if Grim is the “Barghest” in this letter, then not only is he manipulating the Calamity, he's got others doing the same."
Harry Potter[src]
"Thank Merlin, we've finally managed to stamp out this surge. I was starting to worry this nightmare would never end... It is over, isn't it, Harry? I mean, it's true that we discovered someone else is manipulating the Calamity, but we put an end to that... didn't we?"
Constance Pickering[src]
"No, Constance. In fact, I'm quite certain our troubles are only beginning. The Calamity feels more alive and dangerous than ever, and I suspect Lethifold and Barghest are responsible.
It's imperative we discover their true intentions and identities — including whether or not Barghest is really Grim — before they set something in motion that can't be stopped.
"
Harry Potter[src]
"Well, we know that they communicate through the Calamity. Perhaps, if they haven't caught on to us, we'll be able to intercept more of their letters and get some much-needed answers?"
Constance Pickering[src]
"I only hope those answers don't come too late. Remember when I compared the Calamity to an oncoming storm? Well, the thunder's growing deafening and I fear a lightning strike is imminent..."
