Bursting mushrooms were a type of large magical mushroom with a white stalk and red and white spotted cap. When disturbed, a bursting mushroom would swell and shrink rapidly before violently exploding with enough force to harm a human. After presumably being deactivated in some fashion, sliced bursting mushrooms could be used as a potion ingredient in such potions as the Fire Protection Potion. Bursting mushrooms grew in forests such as the Forbidden Forest in Scotland.[1]
One could protect themselves from the explosion of these mushrooms using the Shield Charm, after which they could be safely harvested at no threat to the gatherer.[2]
Usage[]
Bursting mushrooms, along with Salamander blood and wartcap powder, were the three primary ingredients in a Fire Protection Potion.[2]
History[]
Some Gryffindor students made a game of trying to collect bursting mushrooms. At one point, an unidentified Gryffindor student nearly died whilst trying to collect some of these mushrooms, an event which was remembered by Nearly-Headless Nick some years later. The Marauders would tell students to collect some of these mushrooms during the Marauder's puzzle they created to test if students were true Gryffindors. The Unicorn Grove was well known for its crop of bursting mushrooms.[2]
1986-1987 school year[]
During this year, Jacob's sibling and Ben Copper were attempting to complete the Marauder's puzzle, and they surmised that they had to collect some bursting mushrooms based off of the clues in the puzzle and the account by Sir Nick. They travelled to the Unicorn grove to do so, where Jacob's sibling cast a shield charm on themselves and Ben in order to protect them from the bursting mushroom's explosions. They successfully gathered the bursting mushrooms and later used them to brew a Fire Protection Potion.[2]
