"You want to know about cursed amulets, eh? Then I'm your lad."
— Callum to Jacob's sibling[src]

Callum McClintock was a Scottish[2] wizard who was employed by the British Ministry of Magic.[4] He was an expert on cursed objects and worked as an agent for the Rare, Obscure, and Confounding Case Division.[8] As cover, he claimed to work as a janitor for the Magical Maintenance Department.[5]

Biography[]

Early life[]

Whenever his older sister, Catriona came home from break, he took her books. Callum knew he would be sorted into Slytherin like his parents and older sister before him.[6]

In his youth, he began attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry where he was sorted into Slytherin house.[9] After graduating, he started working for the British Ministry of Magic in London, and rented his own residence from a landlord.[6]

Ministry career[]

In the 1990–1991 school year, Jacob's sibling and Olivia Green were introduced to Callum by Alastor Moody as his associate before meeting with Elton Elderberry at the British Ministry of Magic.[4] Callum worked for the Rare, Obscure, and Confounding Case Division (ROCC), a mysterious Ministry division which served to investigate hard to solve cases from other departments, but in order to cover this, he told others in the Ministry that he worked for the Magical Maintenance Department as a janitor.[8]

As a ROCC agent, Callum once saved the life of another agent in Romania. Together, they also investigated a cursed doorbell in Dubrovnik. According to Callum, one of his favourite cases involved a cursed belt buckle in Budapest.[10]

Callum later met with Jacob's sibling in the Ministry All-Purpose Room to research cursed amulets. Arthur Weasley cornered him in the Department of Magical Games and Sports to request he meet with them while he was talking to Ludo Bagman. He presented them with reports detailing cursed amulets from the last two-hundred years for then to read through. When they questioned him about how he knew they wanted to research amulets and how he had such good connections with Ministry officials, he responded that they would know soon enough.[5]

He explained to them that magic was connected to emotions, and that strong emotions could leave imprints on objects, meaning objects could be cursed in many ways. He theorised it was plausible that a tragic event experienced by a wizard could inflict a curse upon an object. He also explained the sentience of wands to them. He also told them that he was simply a janitor, not a Curse-Breaker. Before leaving, he warned them to avoid contact with cursed objects, to avoid being bewitched.[5]

Later in 1991, Callum met with Jacob's sibling and Ruby Honeysuckle at the ROCC Division, who were new recruits to the mysterious Ministry division. He explained to them that he was their orientation leader, along with some of the work they would be doing with ROCC.[8]
