- "Welcome, everyone. I knew you, too, would be mesmerised by the subject of Capnomancy. The art of reading smoke patterns will test the Inner Eye of any Seer. Unfortunately, I see that one of your number will suffer severe burns after the lesson. Watch closely as I demonstrate the art of Capnomancy."

Capnomancy was the branch of divination that involved reading smoke patterns produced from fires.[1]
History[]
During the 1990–1991 school year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Professor Sybill Trelawney taught her seventh-year Divination students about the art of Capnomancy.[1]
Centaurs were known to burn certain herbs, such as sage and mallowsweet, and look for various shapes and symbols in the fumes, as a way to narrow their otherwise highly precise predictions of when an event would take place.[2]
