"I have rights and I'm being oppressed! Repressed? I'M ANGRY!"
— Carmen's thoughts on her own situation[src]

Carmen Malum was a British hag who moved into a cave on the outskirts of Hogsmeade during the late 1980s.

Biography[]

When Carmen was young, she learnt to make potions using the rudimentary magic that hags possessed, and at some point learnt how to cast hexes.[1]

During the late 1980s, Carmen moved into a cave on the outskirts of Hogsmeade along with her pet Nogtail, Noggin. Following a bountiful harvest, the farmers of Hogsmeade expanded their fields further than they would normally, and ended up planting their crops outside Carmen's cave entrance, something which she saw as an infringement of her property rights. Meanwhile, the Dark wizard Alistair Fidgen had realised that a Nogtail was living close by to Hogsmeade, and saw a way to make a profit. He developed a potion, Blight-B-Gone, to sell to the residents once the Nogtail had blighted their crops, and then freed Noggin from his cage.[1]

This infuriated Carmen, who believed that the residents of Hogsmeade were responsible, meanwhile the residents were furious at Carmen for supposedly starting the blight, as well as generally being prejudiced against hags. A Hogwarts student, who was investigating the blight an behalf of Rubeus Hagrid, managed to uncover Fidgen's plot and captured him, turning him over to the authorities despite Carmen's desire to turn him into a stew. They also managed to recover Noggin, and stuck up a deal between Carmen and the farmers, whereby the farmers agreed to provide Carmen with a crate of raw onions, her favourite food, as rent for using the land. Carmen also provided the student with a recipe for a potion to cure the blight, which they dubbed Carmen's Solution.[1]

Personality and traits[]

"I like long walks in the dark, raw onions, and sucking the marrow from bones."
— Carmen's favourite things.[src]

Carmen referred to other people as 'grubs', and frequently threatened to stew people. She had a wheat allergy, and would frequently forage for food such as mushrooms and potion ingredients. She considered teeth to be very valuable, frequently using her own as a bartering good, and stressed the importance of dental hygiene, and it was for this reason she disliked money, as it chipped her teeth. She also didn't have good eyesight, relying on her heightened sense of smell to guide her when she moved about. Her manner of speaking included many irregular words, and she took a while to think on things as, according to her, thoughts were loud. Despite this, she was by no means unintelligent, and despite her frequently shouting about stewing people and eating the body parts of children, she is not known to have ever harmed anyone. She was also quite passionate about her rights as an individual, even if she couldn't always express these thoughts correctly.

Magical abilites and skills[]

  • Potion-making: Carmen was a very skilled potion-maker, despite being entirely self-taught and using unorthodox methods to brew potions. She was able to create a recipe for a potion to reverse the blight caused by Noggin in only a couple of hours.

Possessions[]

  • Cave: Carmen lived in this cave, which she considered her property, as well as the land immediately surrounding it.
  • Noggin: Noggin was Carmen's pet Nogtail, whom she usually kept caged up except when they went on walks.
  • Rock collection: Carmen owned a rock collection, which she described as 'excellent neighbours'.
  • Toad: Carmen owned a toad, which lived in her pockets.
  • Cauldron: Carmen owned several cauldrons, but kept an especially big one reserved for stewing 'grubs', by which she meant humans.
