- "A hundred horseless carriages stood waiting for them outside the station."
- — The use of carriages at Hogwarts[src]
A carriage was a Muggle four-wheeled vehicle which was commonly pulled by horses. It was used in the wizarding world to pull carriages both on the ground and in the sky typically with thestrals.
History[]
In the centuries before the Hogwarts Express was created, students of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry had to find their own transport to travel there with. One mode of choice was to use enchanted carts which were later replaced with carriages.[1] In the 20th century, the school used carriages pulled by thestrals to take students from Hogsmeade station to Hogwarts Castle. For the first four years that he attended Hogwarts, the thestrals were invisible to Harry Potter and others who had not yet witnessed death. The coaches smelled of mould and straw.[4] There were at least a hundred carriages waiting outside the station every year and they took off immediately when everyone was in and the door was closed.[5]
In 1890, Eleazar Fig commandeered a carriage to transport himself, his new student and George Osric to Hogwarts. The carriage was flown by thestrals with a driver at the helm. En route, the carriage was attacked by a dragon who bit it in half and ripped the back containing George off the front. Eleazar, the student and the driver remained in the flying carriage while the back was destroyed by the dragon, killing George. The dragon then destroyed the front half, with Eleazar and the student jumping out and using a Portkey to escape while the driver Apparated.[6]
In 1927, Rudolph Spielman and Aurors used a black, hearse-like carriage flown by thestrals to transport Gellert Grindelwald from the United States of America to Europe. Abernathy switched places with Grindewald using Polyjuice Potion before he entered the carriage. Upon taking off, he Apparated underneath the carriage and onto it where he killed the Aurors. He filled the inside of the carriage with water to stop the ongoing struggle inside, then entered it where he killed Spielman. Grindelwald took control of the thestrals and flew the carriage to Paris.[2]
In 1993, Harry travelled in a Hogwarts carriage for the first time and thought an invisible horse was pulling it.[4] In June 1994, a carriage was waiting for Remus Lupin at the gates of the castle after he resigned.[7] Later that year, students of Beauxbatons Academy of Magic with their Headmistress, Olympe Maxime flew to Scotland in a light-blue carriage pulled by Abraxans.[8] However, using an Abraxan horse-drawn giant carriage was actually a serious breach of the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy.[9]
