"For it is evident that a human confronted with inhuman evil, such as the Dementor, must draw upon resources he or she may never have needed, and the Patronus is the awakened secret self that lies dormant until needed, but which must now be brought to light."
— Catullus Spangle, Charms of Defence and Deterrence[src]

Professor Catullus Spangle (fl. 1700s) was a wizard who was highly regarded as a great researcher of Charms, having written a masterwork titled Charms of Defence and Deterrence.[1]

Biography[]

In his book, Professor Spangle set forth certain principles on the Patronus Charm that is, even today, widely accepted as true. He proposed that the Patronus was a hidden, but inherent part of one's personality, that only comes to light when the able caster needs it, such as when facing something as inhumanly evil as a Dementor (this, according to Spangle, allows us to explain why Patronuses appear in forms that their casters may not expect, or for which they have never felt a particular affinity, such as why Hermione's Patronus was very frisky and moved around a lot, paralleling her).[1]

He also suggested that witches and wizards whose Patronus took the form of their favourite animal were obsessive or eccentric, as they were wizards who could not hide their essential self in common life, in effect parading tendencies that others would prefer to conceal.[1]

In addition to his masterwork, Professor Spangle also wrote an article on techniques for improved Spell Energy distribution, a hand-written manuscript, and a series of manuscripts that were left unpublished. During the Calamity in the late 2010s or early 2020s, a Calamity Investigator working for the Statute of Secrecy Task Force read through the article and, despite Spangle's methods being incredibly unorthodox, found that applying them increased the amount of Spell Energy produced through their Inn Charm at wizarding inns. They also later found and read through the unpublished manuscripts, finding that one contained an informative short instructional on how to access one's secret inner reserve of determination, which they used to increase the number of times they could cast the Trace Charm in quick succession.[2]

A member of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force training to be a professor also discovered and read Professor Spangle's hand-written manuscript, increasing the amount of damage they could deal in combat, before turning it over to Madam Irma Pince for storage in the Hogwarts Library.[2]
