A Challenge Star, also known as a Golden Star, is an golden object created by magic and used in the challenges at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry set up for the students in their first and second year. Harry Potter won a lot of these challenges and gained lots of House points because of it, in the years 1991-1992 and 1992-1993.
First years, as new students, are given the challenges without time counting down and non-time challenge stars while students in second year are given the challenges with a timer that counts down and as such stars which give more time to the clock.
This is a large variation of the time-giving stars. This golden star is only placed in challenges when the second year students is in the challenge, and is always placed in the end of the challenge, functioning as the time-stopping star that ends the challenge.
As the stars are only catch-able for first and second year students at Hogwarts the third year students gets to catch Challenge Shields, which are in fact small variations of the Hogwarts Crests.
