Harry Potter: "Dance partners? I don't dance."
Minerva McGonagall: "Oh yes, you do. That’s what I’m telling you. Traditionally, the champions and their partners open the ball."
Minerva McGonagall explains the custom of the Champions Waltz to Harry Potter.[src]

The Champions Waltz[1] was a traditional part of the Triwizard Tournament's Yule Ball. Serving as the opening to the ball, the three champions (or four champions, in the case of the 1994 tournament) and their chosen partners are the first to dance, though they are often soon joined by the rest of those in attendance. The Weird Sisters chose a slow, mournful tune for the dance in 1994; whether this was traditional or their decision is unclear.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

  • On a prop poster for the Yule Ball created for the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, it is claimed that the Champions Waltz starts at 21:30, rather than at the start of the ball at 19:00. However, this two hour and thirty minute gap can possibly be attributed to the feast before the dance proper.
