Professor Charles Rookwood (fl. 1470s)[5] was a Scottish wizard and a member of the Rookwood family. At some point during the Tudor period, he was the Professor of Transfiguration at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and a member of the Keepers.[4]

Biography[]

Early life[]

Charles was born into the wealthy wizarding Rookwood family sometime in the Tudor period, and was raised at Rookwood Castle in Scotland, the seat of the Rookwood family.[1] In his youth, he attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry where he was sorted into Slytherin House.[4]

Later life[]

Some time after finishing school, he became the Professor of Transfiguration at Hogwarts, During his lifetime, he was a close friend of Percival Rackham, the leader of a secret society dedicated to the protection of ancient magic, of which Charles himself was also a member, alongside Niamh Fitzgerald and San Bakar.[4] He built Vault 12 alongside Rackham.[6]

While Rookwood was a professor, the Keepers oversaw the education and ancient magical training of Isidora Morganach, a student.[7] When Morganach graduated and became a professor herself, Rookwood served as one of her colleagues, visiting her house on one occasion to witness her pain extraction spell in action on Morganach's father.[1]

As the Keepers became increasingly concerned with Morganach's out-of-control, irrational pursuit of power through the manipulation of people's pain into ancient magic, Rookwood confronted her alongside the other Keepers in a duel in the Keepers' Caverns. There, Rookwood fought Morganach and it was San Bakar who eventually killed her, using the Killing Curse.[8]

By 1890, Rookwood was long since dead, with his portrait hanging inside the Map Chamber beneath Hogwarts Castle. His portrait advised a student centuries later, who had the ability to perform ancient magic, as well as his mentor Eleazar Fig. At the same time, Rookwood's descendant Victor Rookwood aimed to untap the power of ancient magic to further his own materialistic ambitions.[3]

Personality and traits[]

Rookwood considered himself a man of "science" and was guided by hard facts. He was pragmatic, direct, and focused. He was keenly observant and fascinated by the ways in which magic could be altered and used.[4]
