- "Welcome back, class! Today we will be studying the ravenous Chinese Chomping Cabbage. I hope you brought snacks! The Chinese Chomping Cabbage has a big appetite, but you'll learn that soon enough. Let's start by learning how to avoid getting chomped by the Chinese Chomping Cabbage."
- — Professor Sprout to her fifth-year Herbology students[src]
Chinese Chomping Cabbage was a magical plant that was presumably native to China. As the name suggests, it had the ability to chomp on foods, such as carrots.[1][2] It was also an ingredient required in the brewing of the healing potion Skele-Gro.[3]
History[]
During the 19th century, an unidentified Dark wizard attempted to take over the British Ministry of Magic with some Chinese Chomping Cabbages, but he was stopped by Helen Thistlewood, an Auror, who was armed only with a basket of Bouncing Bulbs.[5]
During the 1890–1891 school year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Herbology Professor Mirabel Garlick, with the help of Leander Prewett, introduced the new fifth-year to these plants as an example of flora that had uses outside of potions. These plants became antsy without something to chew on, but Professor Garlick kept a scarecrow on hand for that very purpose.[4]
During the 1988–1989 school year at Hogwarts, Professor Sprout taught her fifth-year students about these plants in Herbology class.[1]
In 1995, Hermione Granger copied a diagram of this plant for a homework assignment on potion ingredients, that was given by Professor Snape in her fifth year.[2]
Throughout the 2010–2011 school year, Chinese Chomping Cabbage seeds could be purchased from Gabbey the house-elf in Bewildering Blooms shop, Hogsmeade. A student of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry possibly bought some for their Herbology Careers Research.[6] Another Hogwarts student, Cillian Ahearn, later placed an order for thirty choice Chinese Chomping Cabbages from the shop to help support his argument to his father that Herbology was more than watering begonias.[7]
