This Clabbert lived in the Magical Creatures Reserve in the 1980s.[1]

Biography[]

In the 1980s or early 1990s, Jacob's sibling would often bond with and feed this Clabbert.[1]

During the 1987–1988 school year, this Clabbert was rescued by Holly Blackbird in the United States of America. Meanwhile, at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Rubeus Hagrid sought to improve security at the Magical Creatures Reserve in order to help prevent both intruders like Corrine and Todd Cribb from harming the reserve's creatures and unsupervised students from wandering into the reserve and running afoul of potentially dangerous creatures. Thinking that implementing a stronger watchful eye on the reserve would help make it safer, Hagrid hoped to train a team of Clabberts and place them all around the reserve to act as lookouts, knowing that their forehead pustules would light up if they sensed danger and alert him to anything amiss on the reserve.[1]

As part of his plan, Hagrid contacted Holly and asked her if she had any Clabberts he could adopt. As a result, this Clabbert was brought to Hogwarts in the hope that it could be trained up to act as the first of the lookouts for Hagrid's planned Clabbert-powered alarm system. Hagrid asked Jacob's sibling to meet him and this Clabbert at his hut, where they discussed Clabberts and their pustules while Hagrid explained the situation to them. Jacob's sibling agreed to help and Hagrid offered to set up the first training session, claiming that he intended to call in a Clabbert expert to help them out.[1]

Jacob's sibling met Hagrid in the Care of Magical Creatures classroom, where Hagrid revealed that he had called in Holly to help them train this Clabbert. After explaining Holly's connection to this Clabbert, Hagrid revealed that he and Holly had been discussing ways to safely create a sense of danger to test the Clabbert's alarm reaction. Holly explained that they needed to convince this Clabbert that a stranger was lurking around, although she claimed that, as this Clabbert knew their faces, it also knew that none of them were dangerous at all. Holly suggested that she could put on a mask while Hagrid and Jacob's sibling acted like she was a dangerous stranger. After stepping away to ensure this Clabbert didn't recognise she was the one wearing the mask, Holly showed her pumpkin mask to the others and told them to give this Clabbert a treat if it noticed her and raised an alarm, claiming that she would remove the mask and reveal herself to this Clabbert when they were finished so as not to scare it too much.[1]

As a result of this training session, this Clabbert was successfully able to raise an alarm whenever the "stranger" passed by it. After reassuring Hagrid that the Clabbert was alright and actually seemed to be having fun while following its natural instincts, Holly expressed her relief that the training worked, although she admitted that she couldn't see anything within the mask and that it smelled terrible. Holly revealed that she had to return to the United States for work, but that she was relieved to know that this Clabbert would be happy in its new home. Hagrid stated that he would keep Holly appraised on this Clabbert's progress, with Holly expressing that students could learn a lot from Clabberts. Before she left, Holly asked Hagrid if he had read all of the rules and regulations regarding Clabbert ownership, which Hagrid sheepishly confirmed.[1]

Hagrid next suggested that they should bring this Clabbert back to its home at the Lake in the Magical Creatures Reserve in order to see how it looked out for danger from its favourite tree. The pair arrived at the Lake with this Clabbert, but, before they could start training, a Murtlap approached this Clabbert, with Hagrid claiming that it had arrived to greet this Clabbert. However, this Clabbert was suddenly alarmed and flashed its pustule, indicating that it saw the Murtlap as a dangerous stranger. Jacob's sibling and Hagrid were able to calm the situation down, after which the Murtlap left the scene. Hagrid lamented that they should have prepared this Clabbert for its new home better before bringing it to the reserve and explained that it was still new to the area and thus saw all of the unfamiliar creatures there as potential threats. Jacob's sibling was saddened that this Clabbert wasn't yet able to tell friend from foe, with Hagrid asserting that, if a Murtlap was enough to set off this Clabbert's alarm, the Norwegian Ridgeback living near the Lake would set it off even worse.[1]

Knowing that this Clabbert couldn't act as a guard for the reserve if it couldn't properly tell friend from foe, Jacob's sibling suggested that they needed to engage in another training session to help familiarise this Clabbert with its new neighbours in order to convince it that they were safe to be around. Hagrid offered to set up a socialising meeting between this Clabbert and another of the creatures living at the Lake, stating that the trust Jacob's sibling had built with this Clabbert would help it stay relaxed during the training. Jacob's sibling and this Clabbert met up with Hagrid at the Great Lake, where they found that he had brought the reserve's Norwegian Ridgeback to attempt to bond this Clabbert with it. Jacob's sibling was surprised to see the dragon there, believing that Hagrid had brought a less dangerous creature with which to train this Clabbert, but Hagrid asserted that the Norwegian Ridgeback lived around the Lake too and that, if this Clabbert could get used to being around a dragon, no other creature native to the area would bother it anymore.[1]

This Clabbert's pustule suddenly started flashing, with Hagrid claiming that it was already sensing a threat from this dragon. However, the alarm was revealed to be the result of the arrival of Merula Snyde and Ismelda Murk, who had overheard Hagrid's plans to bring the dragon to the Great Lake and decided to check it out for themselves. After the pair learned that the dragon was indeed real and explained why they had followed them, Merula annoyedly asked Jacob's sibling to shut off this Clabbert's pustule, to which Jacob's sibling explained that it was a natural reaction to a dangerous intruder, which, in this case, was Merula and Ismelda. Merula reacted positively to being called "dangerous" before claiming that they wouldn't have bothered following them if they knew that this was just one of Jacob's sibling's "silly plans," although Jacob's sibling explained that the plan was actually Hagrid's and that the two of them were training this Clabbert to properly sense danger in order to protect the reserve. Merula found the entire situation hilarious and she and Ismelda stepped aside in hopes of watching the training session fail, although Hagrid made them promise to steer clear of the dragon while they watched.[1]

After the training session had concluded, Jacob's sibling and Hagrid found that, while this Clabbert had grown used to the presence of the Norwegian Ridgeback, the dragon still seemed to be uncomfortable with the presence of this Clabbert, although Hagrid believed the pair may have bonded slightly. Hagrid commended Jacob's sibling for their efforts to socialise the two creatures, although Merula asserted that she planned to tell the entirety of the school about the ridiculousness of their proposed plan. Hagrid reassured Jacob's sibling to not pay them any mind before wrangling the dragon in order to return it to the reserve, claiming that he would send word when it was time for the next training session.[1]

Later that day, Amos Diggory, having been informed by Merula and Ismelda about the situation, sent an owl to Jacob's sibling and asked them to meet with him and Hagrid at Hagrid's hut, with Cedric Diggory also being present at the meeting for moral support. Amos explained that, while he wished he was visiting Hogwarts under friendlier circumstances, his visit was instead an official Ministry matter. Hagrid expressed his disappointment that this Clabbert was just getting the hang of things, to which Amos expressed his sympathies but reminded him that there were clear rules about their situation. A saddened Amos explained to a confused Jacob's sibling that it was against wizarding law for Clabberts to be used as alarm systems, stating that too many American witches and wizards had been using Clabberts to protect their gardens from Muggles, who kept mistaking trees full of flashing Clabberts for off-season Christmas decorations, thus attracting their attention rather than keeping them away. Amos claimed that the International Confederation of Wizards had imposed a fine that had largely ended the practice before revealing that he had learned of the situation from a pair of concerned students who had been quite eager to tell him about it, which Jacob's sibling and Cedric realised must have been Merula and Ismelda.[1]

Amos therefore demanded that Jacob's sibling and Hagrid stop their plans for a Clabbert-powered alert system at the reserve, to which the pair eventually agreed. Hagrid lamented that he hadn't properly looked over all of the rules and regulations regarding Clabberts before telling Jacob's sibling about his plan, even after Holly had reminded him to do so previously. Jacob's sibling questioned what Holly thought they had been training this Clabbert for if she didn't know about their plan, with Hagrid claiming that she must have thought they were solely training it for student demonstrations. Hagrid was disappointed that this Clabbert wouldn't get to watch for danger at the reserve like it was so excited to do, revealing that this Clabbert had taken the news hard and needed to be cheered up.[1]

Jacob's sibling suggested that they could set up a demonstration where this Clabbert could show off its new skills in order to cheer up the creature, to which Hagrid agreed after confirming with Amos that it would be allowed provided that it was solely used to improve this Clabbert's wellbeing. Amos offered to help out with the demonstration, desiring to both help raise this Clabbert's spirits and to spend more time with his son, Cedric. Hagrid and Amos later met up with Jacob's sibling and this Clabbert at the Care of Magical Creatures classroom to plan out the demonstration, where Amos expressed his excitement about learning how Jacob's sibling and Hagrid trained magical creatures. Hagrid shyly explained that their methods weren't too fancy, as they mostly consisted of feeding creatures a few treats every so often, but Jacob's sibling asserted that Hagrid was just being modest and that he was actually a wonder with creatures, explaining how the two of them and Holly had trained this Clabbert to detect dangerous strangers.[1]

Amos questioned how they managed to get this Clabbert to not set off its alarm around unfamiliar creatures, to which the pair explained to a shocked Amos that they had socialised it with a Norwegian Ridgeback in order to get it acquainted with its neighbours. Amos was surprised but eventually came to support the idea, stating that this Clabbert wouldn't be scared of any of the native creatures now, as magical creatures reacted to what they considered either safe or dangerous. Amos claimed that he now understood how much effort Jacob's sibling and this Clabbert had put into their training, to which Jacob's sibling asserted the importance of the demonstration to help cheer up this Clabbert by allowing it to show off its skills.[1]

After a brief period of planning, Jacob's sibling suggested that they should allow this Clabbert to show off its ability to spot intruders, with one of them attempting to sneak past it so that it could spot the intruder and raise the alarm. Hagrid admitted that this Clabbert already knew both him and Jacob's sibling, so it wouldn't see either of them as intruders. As a relative stranger to this Clabbert, Amos volunteered to play the part of the "intruder." Hagrid explained that this Clabbert wouldn't be satisfied if it thought they had allowed it to spot an intruder on purpose, to which Amos reassured him that he would give his best effort to attempting to sneak past this Clabbert. Hagrid asserted that this Clabbert's trust in Jacob's sibling would help give it the confidence to pass the demonstration, with Amos claiming that he would see them at the shore of the Great Lake for the demonstration.[1]

That night, Jacob's sibling and this Clabbert arrived at the Great Lake's shore for the demonstration, which had already begun. Jacob's sibling reminded this Clabbert that Amos was planning on trying to sneak past them in an attempt to sit on a previously set up chair without this Clabbert noticing him, offering their support to this Clabbert while it kept an eye out for Amos. After a while, this Clabbert's alarm started going off, revealing that it had sensed something nearby. This Clabbert led Jacob's sibling to Amos, who revealed that he had attempted to sneak past this Clabbert by swimming through the lake using the Bubble-Head Charm to reach the chair. Jacob's sibling asserted that they would never have been able to locate Amos without this Clabbert's help, with Amos proclaiming that that proved how skilled this Clabbert had become.[1]

However, this Clabbert's alarm suddenly started flashing again, revealing that there was still danger nearby. Confused about what the issue could possibly be now that the demonstration was over, this Clabbert led Jacob's sibling and Amos to the danger it had sensed, revealing the Norwegian Ridgeback from the reserve attacking Ismelda, who had snuck after Jacob's sibling and this Clabbert to see what they were planning, with the dragon believing that Ismelda was intruding on its territory. Jacob's sibling and this Clabbert managed to distract the Norwegian Ridgeback while Amos successfully pulled Ismelda to safety. At that moment, Hagrid arrived at the scene, believing the group was harassing the dragon, to which Ismelda angrily claimed that that wasn't what was happening. The Norwegian Ridgeback flew away back to the reserve while Jacob's sibling, Amos, and Ismelda explained what happened to Hagrid. Although Ismelda was still as abrasive as usual towards Jacob's sibling, she did compliment this Clabbert's alertness in realising that she was in danger. Amos and Jacob's sibling praised this Clabbert's alarm sense, with Jacob's sibling realising that the dragon's previous experience bonding with this Clabbert helped them to calm it down, with Hagrid being thrilled that the Norwegian Ridgeback actually had bonded with this Clabbert.[1]

Amos asserted that this Clabbert's abilities had thus been proven twice over and that he was impressed with Jacob's sibling's dedication to magical creatures at Hogwarts and their use of effective, if unconventional, methods. Jacob's sibling thanked Amos for allowing them to perform the demonstration, asserting that this Clabbert would now be happy at Hogwarts even if it couldn't serve as part of a Clabbert-powered alarm system. Hagrid praised Jacob's sibling for helping ensure another magical creature's well-being, even though their original plan had failed, and stated that the Magical Creatures Reserve now had another happy resident.[1]
