A clown is a comic entertainer know for having a flamboyant costume and face paint. Some individuals were frightened by clowns.

History

A clown performer was part of the Circus Arcanus, a travelling wizarding circus in the 1920s. This particular clown manifested as a Foundable during the Calamity of the late 2010s/early 2020s, as part of a surge of Foundables related to the Circus Arcanus. It was returned to its original time by members of the Statute of Secrecy Task Force.

Jacob's sibling's Voldemort Boggart turned into a clown in the Vault of Fear

During the 1986–1987 school year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, when Boggarts were plaguing the school due to the Vault of Fear having been tampered with, Jacob's sibling repelled a Boggart in the form of Lord Voldemort in Jacob's room by giving it a clown costume and forcing it to comically dance with the Boggart-Banishing Spell. When they and their friends later penetrated the Vault of Fear and were confront the many Boggarts within, Barnaby Lee commented that he was frightened of clowns and they were thus his Boggart form. Barnaby stated that he in fact found the Voldemort Boggarts Jacob's sibling turned into clowns more frightening than their original form.

Lottie Turner in the 21st century was able to turn a Boggart in the form of a Dementor into a clown.

Behind the scenes

• In Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, the dance the repelled Voldemort clown Boggart will perform imitates the style of dancing done by Pennywise the Dancing Clown in the 2017 film adaptation of Stephen King's horror novel It.
