"Of course, his birthdays were never exactly fun– last year, the Dursleys had given him a coat-hanger and a pair of Uncle Vernon's old socks."
— Description of Harry Potter's tenth birthday[src]

A coat-hanger is a hanging device used to hang coats and other items of clothing from.[3]

History[]

On Harry Potter's tenth birthday on 31 July 1990, the Dursleys, due to their mean-spirited and miserly nature, brought him very lacklustre presents, one of which was a coat-hanger, along with a pair of Vernon Dursley's old socks.[1]

On 27 July 1997, when Hermione Granger and Kingsley Shacklebolt arrived in the garden of The Burrow following the Battle of the Seven Potters, both of them were holding bent coat hangers, which were used as Portkeys to transport them there.[2]
