This conspiracy was a plot to frame Barnaby Lee, a member of Slytherin House, for a potions mishap that had left the dungeons covered in the mess of a failed potion.[1]
History[]
Background information[]
An unidentified Gryffindor student and her friends wanted to go to Hogsmeade Village, however her friend's parents didn't sign the permission form, which meant her friend couldn't go. Her cousin had given her a vial of Polyjuice Potion over the summer holidays and she believed that they could use Polyjuice to pass as students with permission, however they needed to brew more because she only had one dose.[1]
Brewing the potion[]
Her friend in Ravenclaw stole a copy of Moste Potente Potions from the Restricted Section and the three stole ingredients from the Potions Storeroom to brew the Polyjuice Potion, however they misread the instructions and added more ingredients than was needed, subsequently ruining the potion.
As the cauldron began to bubble over, the Gryffindor student picked up the cauldron and ran to the entrance to the Slytherin common room in an attempt to frame a Slytherin. They also found Barnaby Lee's potion's textbook and placed it near the mess in an attempt to frame him. When Merula Snyde and Ismelda Murk left their common room they were confronted by the mess and by the third friend, a Hufflepuff student, who was blaming Slytherin House.[1]
Investigation by Jacob's sibling and Draco Malfoy[]
Unaware of the accident, Jacob's sibling brought a young Draco Malfoy to the dungeons to find Merula and Ismelda, who were supposed to help Jacob's sibling look after Draco whilst Lucius Malfoy was conducting a surprise inspection of the school. The pair arrived on the scene to find Merula and Ismelda being held up by the Hufflepuff student. After looking around, they found Barnaby's potions textbook and the Hufflepuff student mentioned that the Bloody Baron had probably noticed what was going on. Jacob's sibling and Draco went to the Astronomy Tower, a favourite haunt of the Baron, in order to talk to him, unknowingly seeing the Ravenclaw student, who ran off to tell his friends that Jacob's sibling and Draco were distracted. Whilst the pair were distracted, they started to attempt to brew the Polyjuice Potion again, this time in the Artefact Room, and the Gryffindor student attempted to steal one of Barnaby's hairs to disguise herself as him and confess, pinning the blame on Barnaby.
However, she was sloppy when stealing the hair and Barnaby noticed her, following her back to the Artefact Room. By this time Jacob's sibling, Draco, and Ismelda had concluded that the mess was made from someone trying to brew Polyjuice Potion and had determined that the best place to brew it was the Artefact Room. The duo arrived to find two Barnabys, the Gryffindor student having drunk the potion with Barnaby's hair in it. Both the real and fake Barnaby attempted to convince Jacob's sibling that they were the real Barnaby. However, when that didn't work, the fake Barnaby cast the Incarcerous Spell on the real Barnaby and ran off to Merula and Ismelda. However, they were quickly followed by Jacob's sibling and Draco, who attempted to convince the two that the Barnaby next to them was fake. Before they could manage to, the potion wore off and the truth was revealed, with the Gryffindor student confessing everything to Jacob's sibling and Draco.[1]
Aftermath[]
It is unknown if Jacob's sibling chose to turn the three students in. However, the truth eventually got to Albus Dumbledore, who gave the three detention instead of expelling them as Snape recommended. Following Dumbledore's decision, Snape gave a speech to all the Slytherin students who had assembled in the Great Hall about what had happened. Many felt relieved that Slytherin wasn't going to be unjustly blamed purely because of their reputation of producing Dark wizards. After the speech, Snape gave Jacob's sibling the Slytherin Medal of Excellence as recognition of their resourcefulness, leadership, and cunning, the traits of Slytherin House.[1]
