Cross-Species Switches were a type of Transfiguration that was caused when transforming spells were modified in certain ways.[1] They were presumably a type of Switching Spell that changed certain aspects of different species and may therefore have been Trans-Species Transformation.
History[]
During the 1991–1992 school year, the following problem about Cross-Species Switches could be seen on the blackboard in the Transfiguration Classroom:
- If bodyweight is A, viscousness is V, intended transformation is T, wand power is W and concentration is C, and assuming T=(W×C)÷(V×A)×Z, then what does Z equal?[2]
During the 1994–1995 school year, the fourth-year Transfiguration students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry were given homework on Cross-Species Switches, with one question being:
- Describe, with examples, the ways in which Transforming Spells must be adapted when performing Cross-Species Switches.[1]
Nature[]
It was easier to preform Cross-Species Switches when the creatures were similar in appearance or structure.
