- "The Crown of Mneme is an object of legendary power. It grants its wearer the ability to project thoughts, memories, and even emotions into the minds of others. Because of the danger it posed, it was hidden away many years ago."
- — Elton Elderberry regarding the Crown of Mneme[src]
The Crown of Mneme was a magical artefact of immense power that granted the wearer the ability to project thoughts, memories, and even emotions into the minds of others. It was once hidden in the Sunken Vault before being stolen by the organisation "R".[1]
History[]
- "He created a powerful weapon, but was stopped before it could be used."
- — Jacob's sibling reading from a book cryptically mentioning the Crown[src]
The Crown of Mneme was created by Dai Ryusaki, a Japanese wizard. He created it initially as a medical device used to relieve people of traumatic memories.[2] However, it was very powerful, and due to the danger it posed, it was locked away in the Sunken Vault, deep beneath the Black Lake of Hogwarts.[1] Dai's creation of the Crown was recorded in a book on the history of Mahoutokoro, but the book did not identify the Crown or explain what it was (as knowledge of it died with its creator), only describing it as a "powerful weapon".[4]
In 1990, the Crown of Mneme was retrieved from the vault by Merula Snyde on behalf of a dark cabal known as "R".[5] "R" planned to use the Crown to manipulate key Ministry officials into retiring as part of their goal of forcing officials they considered corrupt out of office.[1]
During the 1990–1991 school year, Olivia Green and Jacob's sibling sought the centenarian Archivist Elton Elderberry at the British Ministry of Magic for information regarding this crown. He told them of its powers and how dangerous it was, and to keep away from it, given its link to Dai Ryusaki. Jacob's sibling later relayed this information to the Circle of Khanna at Hogwarts.[1]
Later, Olivia and Jacob's sibling were granted entry into the Ministry of Magic Archives by Elderberry, where Jacob's sibling found a document written by Ryusaki detailing the true nature of his good intentions for the Crown. However, it detailed how dangerous it was, and they realised they had to warn their father Peregrine who they suspected was in possession of it.[2]
Peregrine later made his son Jacob wear the Crown enhanced with the power of Dai Ryusaki's mind-enhancing potion in the Shrieking Shack in order to demonstrate its mind control abilities. Jacob was a Legilimens, which was necessary, in order for him to develop full mind control powers with the Crown and potion. Jacob successfully did control the test subject, but was forced to remove the Crown when he began experiencing the subject's worst memories, causing him pain. The Crown had been affected by the Sunken Vault's curse, which caused a surge of power to be released from his head and hit them, incapacitating them. However, Peregrine demanded that their younger child continue in order to learn mind control needed to take down the Ministry to avenge Dai's death. Jacob's sibling knocked the Crown under a piano with wandless magic, allowing them to escape via Disapparition (with Jacob and their friend) as Peregrine, Verucca Buckthorn-Snyde and Merula Snyde went to retrieve it.[3]
