This bee pendant was a cursed pendant that cursed anyone who was given the pendant by their lover to fall into a deep and cursed sleep.[1]
Description[]
The bee pendant was an exquisitely made piece of jewellery made from very high quality materials, such as gold, jewels, and goblin-wrought silver. It was crafted in the exact likeness of a honeybee.[1]
On the back of the pendant was a forged maker's mark that gave the impression that the pendant was crafted, at least in part, by Merlin. When Revelio was cast on the pendant, the fraudulent maker's mark would disappear and a riddle would take its place.[1] The riddle said:
What love rends, it can also mend
If words longing to be heard are spoken, whilst clasped in love's gentle hand
A new sun will rise, and dreams of love will end.
Effects[]
The pendant had a very strong sleeping curse placed on it that managed to retain its potency nearly a thousand years after it was made. The curse would only activate after someone who was in love wore the pendant after being given it by their lover. Due to the specific circumstances that were required to activate the curse, there were several instances where the curse didn't activate after someone had worn the necklace, leading to a confusing history.[1]
The curse could be broken when two conditions were met: when the lover of the person who was cursed grasped their lover's hands and told them they loved them at sunrise, and when the person cursed was truly in love with the other person.[1]
History[]
Middle Ages[]
During his reign, King Ragnuk was commissioned to craft the bee pendant for the parents of a witch who belonged to a highborn family. The witch wanted to marry a Muggle beekeeper's son, which the parents objected to, as the boy was of a lower class. When they heard their daughter was planning on running away and eloping, they schemed of a way to ruin the marriage. The bee pendant was unknowingly cursed by the witch's family shortly after they acquired it and they gave it to their daughter, with the expectation that she would give it to her lover. The parents were right, and, when the pendant was given to the beekeeper's son, he fell into a deep slumber, never to awaken.[1]
Interim[]
It is unknown what happened to the pendant immediately afterwards, though King Ragnuk thought it had been lost. Over the years, the pendant re-emerged in wizarding society, and, each time the curse was activated, the victim never awoke from their slumber.[1]
1980s[]
During the 1980s, the pendant managed to make its way to the Three Broomsticks Inn, where it was found by Jacob's sibling and their Valentine's Day date. Jacob's sibling, unaware of the curse on the pendant, gave it to their date, who promptly fell into a deep sleep. Bill Weasley was searching for a cursed artefact in the Three Broomsticks Inn and crossed paths with Jacob's sibling, who was frantically trying to work out what had happened. Jacob's sibling showed them the bee pendant and together they started to research it. Bill searched through the archives at Gringotts whilst Jacob's sibling talked to Professor Binns about a strange mark on the back of the pendant, which turned out to be the maker's mark of Merlin. This prompted Jacob's sibling to talk to the portrait of Merlin. However, they were waylaid by the portrait of Sir Cadogan who told them the mark was a forgery. Jacob's sibling met up with Bill again, and together the pair went to see the ghost of King Ragnuk in Godric's Hollow, who told them the story of its manufacture. Bill went back to Gringotts to do more research whilst Jacob's sibling told their friends what had happened. Together, Jacob's sibling and their friends managed to break the curse on the pendant and free their date from their cursed slumber. Later, when everyone was celebrating the curse being lifted, Jacob's sibling's date gave them back the now curse-free pendant to remind them of their date.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
- Although, according to goblin rules of inheritance, the ghost of King Ragnuk would be the rightful owner of the pendant, he renounced his claim to the pendant, as he had no wish to own it.
