- Jacob's sibling: "Earlier, you said there was something troubling about this artefact. What was it?"
- Elton Elderberry: "Well, like you said, it just seems to fall into the unsavoury hands of evil. Even when someone with good intentions picked it up. Something always led them to the Dark Arts."

Dai Ryusaki owned an amulet which had a sinister history.[1]
History[]
- "Cursed by Ryusaki's dying rage, such an artefact would carry a potent magic."
- — Verucca Buckthorn-Snyde regarding the amulet[src]
Ryusaki was wearing this amulet when he was wrongfully executed for being a Dark wizard. After this, wizards who came into contact with it were led down the path of the Dark Arts. The British Ministry of Magic took it into their ownership, but it kept slipping through their fingers.[1]
During the 1990–1991 school year, Jacob's sibling began investigating the amulet after having uncovered the truth about Dai from Archivist Elton Elderberry at the Ministry. They remembered their father Peregrine was wearing a strange amulet which they found suspicious. They researched the amulet in the Ministry of Magic Archives with Elton's assistance, reading in a file its dark history. Elton informed them that it indeed had a history of turning people evil, and how it had been stolen from the Ministry. They later researched cursed objects with the janitor Callum McClintock in the Ministry All-Purpose Room, where they deduced that the amulet was cursed by Dai's dying rage, making its wearers turn to evil.[1]
Fearing their father was in danger, they tried to warn him at the Three Broomsticks Inn, taking Jacob with them, but their father dismissed their concerns, saying the amulet which he was wearing was harmless. He claimed to have found it at the bottom of the Arabian Sea where it had been lost for decades. He told them he had checked the artefact for any dangerous qualities, including curses, and that the Ministry had possibly given them false information. He let them and Jacob examine the amulet, and they could not detect a negative feeling from it to indicate it was cursed, only that it felt cold.[3]
Jacob's sibling later realised their father was under the amulet's negative influence in the Shrieking Shack when he expressed the desire to avenge Dai's death.[4]
While meeting with her in Knockturn Alley, Jacob's sibling revealed to Verucca Buckthorn-Snyde that the amulet was the cause of Peregrine's personality change. She acknowledged the amulet's potency and told them that they needed to plan to remove the amulet from him.[5] Their plan ultimately failed in Knockturn Alley, as their father foiled them when their younger child attempted to steal the amulet from him under their Invisibility Cloak while distracted by Verucca, knocking them over with the Banishing Charm. Verucca then took matters into her own hands and cast the Conjunctivitis Curse at Peregrine, which Jacob intercepted, and then Disapparated when Aurors arrived to arrest her.[6]
In 1992, the amulet was sent to Jacob's sibling in the Rare, Obscure, and Confounding Case Division and left on their new desk 8n an envelope along with some files.[2]
