- — Hermione Granger and Rubeus Hagrid regarding hate mail[src]
These letters were responses to Rita Skeeter's article "Dumbledore's Giant Mistake". Unlike Hermione Granger's hate mail, however, which were generally just insulting and rude, those that Hagrid received were even worse, as partially due to the prejudices against giants, many of the letters expressed the desire that Hagrid should just die or be killed, and one of them even went to the point to say that if he had any dignity, he'd jump in a lake (which would cause him to commit suicide by drowning because of his size and weight). Hagrid was temporarily extremely affected by these letters, isolating himself in his hut and refusing to teach for days, until he was cheered up by a combination of Albus Dumbledore's, Harry's, Ron's and Hermione's efforts.[1]
