The Dale Family Tomb was a cavern in the Hogwarts Valley near Brocburrow. It was built by Marmaduke Dale for the Dale family. However, shortly after he was buried, a curse was placed on his descendants if they tried to enter it, causing it to be abandoned for centuries.[1]

Description[]

The entrance was on the side of a cliff. To the left was a dungeon with a chest. There were several dungeons inside, including one which had an archway covered with vines. One was protected with a Devil's Snare due to Marmaduke's love of Herbology.[1]

History[]

When he died, Marmaduke Dale was buried in the tomb. Upon his sarcophagus was the family crest which his mother had left him upon her death. His elder brother, Granum Dale thought he should have inherited the crest so he stole it off the sarcophagus. He placed a curse upon the tomb to prevent Marmaduke's descendants entering it.[1]

Nobody entered the tomb for centuries. In the 1890s, Marmaduke's descendant, Samantha Dale researched her family and discovered the curse on the tomb. Her brother, William Dale thought she was wrong and tried to prove it. He went to the tomb but he was cursed upon walking into it, with his feet transfiguring into purple beets. She asked her friend for help returning the crest to the sarcophagus in the hope it would break the curse and restore her brother's feet. They agreed to the challenge.[1]

They flew to the tomb and when they walked in, they were unaffected by the curse. They kept exploring until they found a large dungeon which had a Riparian Troll living inside it. When they defeated it, they finally found the tomb with Marmaduke's sarcophagus, which was partly open. It had dittany leaves around it. They put the crest on top of the sarcophagus, which broke the curse and returned William's feet back to normal.[1]
