The Dark Tower was a narrow, tall tower near the Transfiguration Courtyard at Hogwarts Castle. This tower was used as a prison, having several cells, with the topmost being at the roof. The cells were not, however, charmed or otherwise protected against breaking-in from the outside.[1] It had seven floors.[2] There were four gargoyles on the sides of the tower which directed water away from the tower when it rained.[1]
History[]
Between 1269 and 1369 an unidentified medieval Charms Master kept a troll in the Dark Tower cell for his students to practise challenging spells on.[3]
Behind the scenes[]
- In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, this tower is where Sirius Black is held prisoner, as opposed to Filius Flitwick's office in the West Tower, which was used in the book.
- In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the Dark Tower, and the Defence Against the Dark Arts tower are replaced by the Astronomy Tower.
- In the video game adaptation of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the Dark Tower is referred to as the West Tower.
- In LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4, the Dark Tower is a level in which you have to beat the chief Dementor in order to save Sirius Black.
