The Dark Tower was a small but high tower near the Transfiguration Courtyard at Hogwarts Castle. This tower seems to be used as a prison. It has, at least two cells, the topmost being at the roof. The cells are not, however, charmed or otherwise protected against breaking-in from the outside as Harry Potter and Hermione Granger broke out Sirius Black from this tower in 1994.

In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, this tower is where Sirius Black is held prisoner, as opposed to Filius Flitwick's office in the West Tower.
In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the Dark Tower is replaced by the Astronomy Tower.
