Dartmoor is an area of 368 square miles of moorland in south Devon, England, comprised mostly of uncultivated hill land.
History
In 1379, Dartmoor was the site of a duelling contest in which wizards and witches from across Europe came to partake: according to contemporary reports, the contest (which was held at night, so as to avoid attracting the attention of Muggles) featured duelling of a level of skill that was almost unprecedented. Elizabeth Smudgling won this contest with a single Disarming Charm (a charm that, in the opinion of magical theoretician Miranda Goshawk, was of Smudgling's own making) and was subsequently awarded the title of "Supreme Dueller".
In 1994, the 422nd Quidditch World Cup was held in a "nice deserted moor"[1] in Dartmoor.[2] For that purpose, a gigantic stadium was built, with seats for one hundred thousand wizards.[3] Wizards camped at Mr Roberts's campsite, which was later a site of a Death Eater riot, on the night of the Cup final.
Behind the scenes
- For the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, scenes at the Quidditch World Cup Campsite were filmed at Beachy Head, in Eastbourne, East Sussex. Beachy Head is known for its chalk sea cliffs, which are seen on the film. While the novel does not specify where the campsite was located, exactly, later, Pottermore revealed it was in Dartmoor, which is actually landlocked.
