- "Mr Slinkhard doesn't like jinxes, does he? But I think they can be very useful when they're used defensively."
- — Hermione Granger regarding the defensive use of jinxes[src]
A defensive jinx[1] (incantation unknown) was a jinx used to defend a witch or wizard from harm.[1]
History[]
- "...or instructions for defensive jinxes that actually make your ears fall off..."
- — Molly Weasley[src]
In 1996, Molly Weasley noted to Harry Potter that people were taking advantage of others' fears of Lord Voldemort by selling odd things that supposedly guarded against him and his Death Eaters. These things included so-called protective potions, or instructions for defensive jinxes that actually made one's ears fall off. In response to this, Minister for Magic Rufus Scrimgeour set up several new offices, and Arthur Weasley, who had been promoted, was heading the Office for the Detection and Confiscation of Counterfeit Defensive Spells and Protective Objects.[1]
In 1997, Harry Potter exited the Gryffindor common room on his way to Albus Dumbledore's office when he passed Peeves the poltergeist on the seventh floor of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Peeves had swooped past in the opposite direction and threw bits of chalk at Harry who responded by casting a defensive jinx which Peeves dodged.[2]
