The defensive shield locations were a set of four spots located throughout Hogwarts Castle.[1]
History[]
They were so named because they were ideal locations from which to cast protective enchantments around the castle. The locations featured the Hogwarts crest, and large stone pieces of the crests, one for each house mascot, had to be located and assembled before each location could be cast from.[1]
On 1 May, 1998, Filius Flitwick made use of all four defensive shield locations to cast a variety of defensive charms around Hogwarts. He was assisted in finding and securing the locations by Minerva McGonagall. This assistance proved necessary, as Alecto and Amycus Carrow attempted to stop Flitwick by sending numerous Death Eaters, Slytherin students, and spiders to attack him.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
- The existence of these locations cannot be considered canon, as, in the novel, Flitwick was able to cast the enchantments with no difficulty from an arbitrarily chosen window near Ravenclaw Tower and in the film Flitwick, Molly Weasley and Horace Slughorn did it from the Viaduct Courtyard while Poppy Pomfrey did it from the Hospital Wing tower.
