The Department of Magical Artefacts was a department of the British Ministry of Magic's research wing tasked with preserving and studying magical artefacts of cultural or historical interest.[1]
Functions[]
The department was in charge of the Ministry of Magic's investigations into, acquisition of, and organisation of various magical artefacts. The department was led by a Head Curator, and they would sometimes be aided by Nifflers[2] and other magical creatures[3] where their investigations and excavations required it. They were also in charge of a Recovery Team whose goal was to recover magical artefacts.[4]
History[]
1980s and 1990s[]
The department contacted Jacob's sibling to ask if they could use the Niffler at the Magical Creatures Reserve to help in their excavation of an ancient artefact in Scotland due to the artefact's metallic properties. Jacob's sibling agreed, and the Niffler went to the department to aid with their investigation and excavation of the ancient artefact. The Niffler performed such an exemplary job that neither the artefact or the excavation site was damaged.[2]
The department later contacted Jacob's sibling again to ask for the help of the Frost Salamander at the Magical Creatures Reserve, as one of their researchers had gotten stuck in a magical ice maze in Antarctica.[3]
2000s and 2010s[]
Sage Bragnam, a magical historian specialising in examining artefacts and runes, worked as the department's Head Curator by the late 2010s.[1]
Genevieve Bladt, one of the individuals that went unexpectedly missing along with four other people during a string of mysterious disappearances that took place in London in 2015, worked in this department.[5]
Behind the scenes[]
- The employees in this department seem to operate similarly to Gringotts's Curse-Breakers, just in the employment of the Ministry of Magic.
