- "Now, see here, Dumbledore, I've given you free rein, always. I've had a lot of respect for you. I might not have agreed with some of your decisions, but I've kept quiet. There aren't many who'd have let you hire werewolves, or keep Hagrid, or decide what to teach your students without reference to the Ministry."

The Department of Magical Education was a department at the British Ministry of Magic and responsible for the accreditation and regulation of institutions of magical learning in Britain.
Functions[]
While the full scope of this department's purview is unknown, the Ministry of Magic was known to have had its own ideas about what material was suitable for students to learn, as well as at what age it was appropriate to teach them certain topics, so in addition to the fact that the Head of the division was implied to have worked with the staff to set the goals for each school year,[2] the Hogwarts Headteacher was also, as a general rule, required to submit the curriculum to Ministry approval before they could implement it.[3]
History[]
- "If I were the Minister for Magical Education and we were setting goals for next year, what would they be?"
- — Part of the department's job, as alluded to by the Progress Report of Magical Didactics[src]
Established sometime after the Ministry's inception in 1707, both Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry[4] and Kwikspell Company[5] were registered with and approved by the Ministry of Magic. Smaller and less well-regulated institutions had come and gone throughout the centuries, most of which had not registered with the Ministry, making it impossible for the standard of education they offered to be officially vouched for.[6]
In preparation for a new student joining Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in their fifth year, the division worked with Phineas Nigellus Black to provide a Wizard's Field Guide to help them with their studies.[7]
At some point in the 1995–1996 school year, this division made the Progress Report of Magical Didactics, which was used by then-Hogwarts High Inquisitor Dolores Umbridge to evaluate Hogwarts teachers.[1]
