Devon is a large county in the south west of England. It is sometimes called Devonshire, though that is a traditional, not official name. The county has two coastlines: the English Channel in the south and the Bristol Channel in the north. It is bordered by Cornwall to the west and Dorset and Somerset to the east.
History[]
Ottery St Catchpole was a small village in Devon that had both Muggle and magical people living there. Prominent wizarding families in the village included the Weasley,[2] Lovegood, Fawcett, and Diggory families.[3] Nicolas and Perenelle Flamel made their home here as well, at some point prior to their deaths in 1992.[1]
The Ilfracombe Incident involved a Common Welsh Green dragon attacking Muggle sunbathers on the beach in Ilfracombe, in 1932. This secrecy breach was rectified by the witch Tilly Toke and her family, who subdued the dragon and used the Memory Charm on the Muggles present, so they would have not remembered seeing the dragon. However, one Muggle known as "Dodgy" Dirk still had some recollection of the dragon.[4]
Devon was where Shuntbumps, a now-defunct broomstick sport, once rose to popularity.[5]
