As creating food is the first of the five Principal Exceptions to [[:en:Gamp's_Law_of_Elemental_Transfiguration|Gamp’s Law of Elemental Transfiguration]], it cannot be created out of nothing. Therefore, Ron could only have made an inedible mushroom or perhaps a plate that looked like a mushroom, not the food itself.

"Ron had caused a dinner plate to mutate into a large mushroom and had no idea how it had happened."
—On Ron's use during his Charms O.W.L[src]

This spell is used to transform a dinner plate into a large mushroom. During Ronald Weasley's Charms Ordinary Wizarding Level in Transfiguration, he somehow managed to use this spell, instead of the charm he was supposed to have been performing, and had no idea how he'd done it.[1]
