- "Puffing loudly, Harry, Ron, and Hermione climbed the tightly spiralling steps, getting dizzier and dizzier, until at last they heard the murmur of voices above them and knew they had reached the classroom."
- — Narrative[src]
The Divination Stairwell[2] was a narrow, spiralling set of stairs accessible from a corridor on the seventh-floor. At the top of the staircase was a small landing with a trap door on the ceiling, from which a ladder could be ascended to allow access to the Divination Classroom. A portrait of a group of women in crinolines hung near the bottom of the stairwell, while a painting of sinister-looking monks near the top.[1] It took five minutes to get from the bottom of the stairwell to the Fat Lady's Corridor.[3]
Behind the scenes[]
- In the film series, the Divination Classroom is located at the top of the stairwell through a regular door, rather than a trap door and ladder.
- The scenes in this staircase were filmed in St Paul's Cathedral, Ludgate Hill, London, England, UK. The set used for this staircase was later used for the Hogwarts Turris Magnus staircase in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
- This staircase is located on the seventh floor corridor leading off from the Grand Staircase in the video game adaptation of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, placing it in one of the two other towers surrounding the Quad (excluding the Gryffindor Tower). Hence, it is presumed that one of these represents the North Tower.
- The stairwell is omitted in the video game adaptation of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and replaced by Slughorn's Staircase.
