This grave was created as a memorial for the freed house-elf, Dobby following his death due to a knife-wound inflicted by Bellatrix Lestrange at Malfoy Manor.[1]
History[]

Dobby's grave being dug at Shell Cottage
This grave was located in the garden at Shell Cottage, in Tinworth. It was dug by Harry Potter with the help of Ron Weasley and Dean Thomas. Harry used Draco Malfoy's former wand to carve the epitaph on the grave, HERE LIES DOBBY, A FREE ELF. After the grave was dug, Luna said a few words about how grateful she was that he had saved her and Ron agreed with her. Harry silently gave his grievances. After everyone left to go back to the cottage, Harry carved the words on Dobby's grave.[1]
When Harry later traveled to Gringotts Wizarding Bank, he saw the streets around and had a somewhat regretful thought that Dobby's grave should be at a better place.[2]
In the years since Dobby's death, Harry continued to regularly visit Dobby's grave at Shell Cottage to pay respects to the elf, bringing along a new pair of socks to leave at the grave each time to let Dobby know how much he was missed.[3]
Behind the scenes[]
- Dobby's death and burial scenes in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 were filmed on Freshwater West beach, Pembrokeshire, Wales.
- Many fans have visited the beach to lay painted rocks, several crosses, and many socks in Dobby’s memorial. However, as the memorabilia has had a negative effect on the environment, the beach asks that visitors just interact with the site by taking photos.[4]
