The Double-ended newt was a magical beast consisting of two newts sharing the same body. They tended to swim around a lot and preferred to eat algae.[1] Double-ended newts were often kept as pets by wizards and witches, and could be purchased from the Magical Menagerie in Diagon Alley.[1][2]

On 19 August, 1992, the male shopkeeper of the Magical Menagerie noted that the stock of Double-ended newts needed to be cleaned.[3]
On 31 August, 1993, the clerk of the Magical Menagerie advised a customer how to take care of a Double-ended newt.[2]
