The Dragon Variation of the Slytherin Defence was a chess strategy that was considered very complex, but was devastating when used correctly, even being considered by some to be unbeatable. Many chess theory books were written about this legendary strategy. According to the Dragon Variation, the player would castle kingside (0-0) in order to capture the opponent's most powerful pieces.[1]
History[]
Aberforth Dumbledore utilised the Dragon Variation of the Slytherin Defence to defeat Hogwarts Headmaster Brian Gagwilde in a game at the Hog's Head Inn, with this defeat being so crushing that Gagwilde stopped playing the game altogether.[1]
During the 1988–1989 school year, Celine Castillon utilised the Dragon Variation of the Slytherin Defence during the Walter Aragon Wizard Chess Competition, enabling her to win the first round. After being informed of this by Murphy McNully, Jacob's sibling worked with Murphy and Aberforth to invent a counter-strategy to the Dragon Variation of the Slytherin Defence, which they were successfully able to employ to defeat Celine in the final round of the competition.[1]
