This duel between Albus Dumbledore and Aurelius Dumbledore took place on a street in Berlin. It took place in an inverted-mirrored dimension caused by Albus creating the dimension by inverting the world using magic, so Muggles could not see it or destroy any part of the real world.[1]

History[]

Prelude[]

In 1927, Gellert Grindelwald told the Obscurial Aurelius Dumbledore, who had been searching for the family which had abandoned him, that he was a member of the Dumbledore family, and that they willingly discarded him. As a result of the abandonment, Aurelius was adopted by Mary Lou Barebone in New York, a descendant of the Scourers and leader of the New Salem Philanthropic Society. Barebone, who hated wizards, was aware of Aurelius's abilities, and abused him heavily as a result. Although he had escaped from her after being unmasked as an Obscurial, a wizard who had violently supressed his magic after attempting to hide it, Aurelius still wanted answers, and Grindelwald provided him with proof of his identity: a bird which had been following him was a phoenix, a mythological creature with strong ties to the Dumbledore bloodline.[2]

Secretly, Grindelwald had lied to Aurelius about some of his history, hoping that he would hunt down and kill Albus Dumbledore, the only wizard in the world with the power to match him, and the only one he could not kill personally.

Over the next years, Aurelius would use his newfound magical powers to send messages from his mirror in Nurmengard to the Hog's Head Inn in Hogsmeade, to the man he would later learn was his father: Aberforth Dumbledore, Albus's younger brother.[3]

In 1932, as Grindelwald prepared to take over the wizarding community during the election to choose its new leader, Dumbledore had come to Berlin to stop him and, aware of Aurelius's intention to track him down, prepared to face him.[3]

The duel[]

Dumbledore, knowing that Aurelius was in Berlin, tracked him down using his pocket watch and once he realised that Aurelius was following him, he crossed the street and stopped in front of a shop window, with his wand up his sleeve and ready to attack, Aurelius stood and watched his uncle for a moment. Albus, using the reflection to see his pursuer, used a spell on a falling snowflake, turning it into a water droplet. He blew it through the window, above the cars crossing the streets, and touching Aurelius on the forehead before dissolving on Aurelius's face. Now both in an inverted-mirrored dimension, the older wizard turned to face him, and Aurelius asked whether he knew what it felt like to always be alone. While Dumbledore guessed the origin of the messages he had seen on his brother's mirror, Aurelius let loose his frustration that his family hadn't tried to protect him, or even find him.[1]

As his phoenix flew past, Aurelius used his Obscurus powers to shatter and levitate the street cobbles around him. He then attacked using his wand, casting a spell that Dumbledore easily deflected. The young man rushed his uncle, drawing more and more rumble from the buildings around him. Dumbledore Disapparated and reappeared further down the street, where Aurelius tried to collapse an entire building onto him. This move was once again easily dismissed by the older wizard. Aurelius reached Dumbledore, and pushed him away with his hand, windows and the road shattering as he went. Dumbledore Disapparated again, and Aurelius following onto a tram where he slip it and once again tried to throw at his uncle. Dumbledore disappeared yet again. But, when Aurelius tried to follow him again, he couldn't find him. As he turned to try and find him, Dumbledore reappeared behind him, pointing his wand at the back of his neck.[1]

DeluminatorBerlin

Dumbledore told Aurelius that things were not what they appeared, and demonstrated his point using his Deluminator to reveal that they had been fighting in a mirror dimension from the start, a place shrouded in shadow and which showed the street they had been on below their feet. Angered, Aurelius tried to fight Dumbledore again, but his uncle disappeared and reappeared constantly, never allowing any of his spells to hit him. He calmly exposed Grindewald's lies, and finally appeared completely, allowing Aurelius to attack him full on with a spell that he easily deflected before delicately repelling his nephew. Aurelius fell back above a reflection of Berlin, as his phoenix flew above him. Now realising, officially that Aurelius was a Dumbledore at last. Dumbledore knelt beside his nephew and told him that Grindelwald had lied to him about his family, but not about who he was: he was a Dumbledore. Dumbledore sneakily picked up a phoenix feather. Threads of Aurelius's Obscurus coalesced once more and returned to his body. Dumbledore placed his hand on Aurelius's chest and apologised for the pain he had to endure.[1]

Using the Deluminator once again, Dumbledore took them out of the mirror dimension using this item, unflipping into the real world, leaving Aurelius lying in a pool of melted snow. His uncle helped him up, before silently departing.[1]
