- "Take this lesson to your grave... Avada Kedavra!"
- — Patricia Rakepick casting the Killing Curse[src]
This duel was a conflict that took place during the 1989–1990 school year, between Patricia Rakepick, Jacob's sibling, Ben Copper, and Merula Snyde, with Rowan Khanna watching from a close distance. It was the result of Jacob's sibling, Ben Copper, and Merula Snyde going into the forest to intercept a possible meeting between Jacob, an individual formerly involved in a search for the Cursed Vaults, and the organisation "R". The duel eventually resulted in the death of Rowan Khanna, who died to protect Ben Copper from being hit by a lethal Killing Curse cast by Rakepick.[2]

Background[]
Finding the white quill[]
Sometime during the 1989–1990 school year of Hogwarts, Talbott Winger told Jacob's sibling about a white owl that he discovered in the Owlery, which dropped many letters. One of the letters was written in Japanese, which they translated to a message informing them of a white quill by the shore of the Great Lake. After a search of the lake shore, they found a white quill, which they untransfigured to reveal a message sent by the organisation R addressed to Jacob, asking him to meet the sender in the Forbidden Forest Grove.
Forming the team[]
Jacob's sibling then joined up with Ben Copper to go together into the Forest Grove to intercept the meeting. Ben then recruited Merula Snyde to join them, which was at first not accepted by Jacob's Sibling, however he was eventually convinced to take her.[2]
Entering the forest and searching[]
The three then went into the Forbidden Forest, heading to the Forest Grove. Unbeknownst to them however, they were being followed from a close distance behind them by their friend, Rowan Khanna. Eventually they reached the Forest Grove, and began to search for clues.[2]
The search led them to the discovery of an Opal Necklace belonging to the Dark witch Patricia Rakepick. As they were discussing the discovery, a swarm of Dementors showed up and circled the group. The group then began casting the Patronus Charm to protect themselves, but their Patronuses were unable to ward off the sheer number and they were quickly surrounded with dire consequences imminent.[2]
The duel[]
Before the Dementors could attack the three students, a concealed person cast a Patronus Charm of their own in the form of a lioness, warding off all of the Dementors, before revealing themselves to be Rakepick herself. When questioned about why she saved them in light of her earlier betrayal, however, she replied that she simply wanted the pleasure of kiling them herself. Upon quickly incapacitating Jacob's sibling and Merula, she proceeded to engage Ben Copper in a duel. Though he put up a valiant fight, Rakepick had the upper hand and deflected most of his spells, and repeatedly knocked him to the ground with a well-timed spell of her own. Eventually, Ben managed to strike her successfully with his enhanced Knockback Jinx, and, unflappable in his efforts, stated that it would teach her a lesson.
Enraged that the younger wizard had actually managed to get one over on her, Rakepick retorted that he would "take this lesson to [his] grave!", and proceeded to cast the most sinister and evil of all spells, the Killing Curse. Seconds before it hit the young Gryffindor, however, he was pushed out of the way by Rowan Khanna, who had been watching from a distance and now sprang into the fray to protect their friend. Unfortunately, this put them in the path of the spell instead and Rowan was struck and killed instantly, sprawling dead on the floor of the grove. Jacob's sibling cried out in anguish at their friend's death, followed by Ben and Merula's own horror-struck reactions, but a smug Rakepick merely proclaimed the debt of a friend's life owed to "R" fulfilled and Disapparated, completely unremorseful of the terrible deed she had just committed.[2]
Aftermath[]
Rowan's death struck the entirety of Hogwarts as an extremely painful event and their death was mourned by all of their friends, who found it difficult to come to terms with their tragic loss. In particular to suffer were Jacob's sibling, Ben Copper, and Merula Snyde, all of whom had watched them die. A memorial service took place in the Great Hall, where Professor Dumbledore gave a brief eulogy of Rowan's life, aspirations and sacrifice before leading the students and staff in raising their wands as a tribute to Rowan.[3]
Rowan's murder prompted a vengeful Jacob's sibling, Merula and Ben to form their own secret organisation to combat the malevolent "R" and get revenge on Rakepick for what she had done.[3] The organisation was named Circle of Khanna in memory of Rowan.[4]
