This Dugbog lived in the Magical Creatures Reserve in the 1980s.[1]
Biography[]
In the 1980s, Jacob's sibling would often bond with and feed this Dugbog.[1]
During the 1988–1989 school year, this Dugbog completely ate Professor Pomona Sprout's Mandrake supply three times. Professor Sprout wanted to banish it from Hogwarts due to this, but Rubeus Hagrid thought that the creature shouldn't be banished simply for giving in to its hunger. To keep the Dugbog safe from Sprout, Hagrid hid the creature in the woodpile in his hut all morning, with the Dugbog's natural log-like camouflage managing to keep it hidden. Knowing that the Dugbog was a friendly individual, Hagrid hoped that Sprout would at least meet the creature before banishing it, hoping that this would convince her to let the Dugbog stay. However, he feared leaving the Dugbog alone while he went to set up the meeting with Sprout, as he worried that the Dugbog would simply try to eat Sprout's Mandrakes once again. Therefore, Hagrid called Jacob's sibling to his hut and informed them of the Dugbog's situation. After sympathising with the Dugbog's situation, Jacob's sibling agreed to watch over the creature and keep it safe and away from any Mandrakes for the afternoon while Hagrid went to meet with Sprout. Hagrid suggested that Jacob's sibling ask Liz Tuttle and Sir Ribbithe to help them manage the Dugbog, to which Jacob's sibling agreed. Once Hagrid was confident that the Dugbog trusted Jacob's sibling, he recommended that Jacob's sibling and Liz should take the Dugbog to the shore of the Great Lake to keep it busy for the afternoon, as Dugbogs were known to enjoy water.[1]
Upon getting Liz to agree to help them manage the Dugbog, the two headed to the shore of the Great Lake with the Dugbog. However, while they were keeping the Dugbog busy, the two worried that, even if Hagrid could convince Sprout to meet the Dugbog, there was no guarantee that she would allow it to stay at Hogwarts, or that the creature would stop eating her Mandrakes if it did. Wanting to come up with a way to guarantee that the Dugbog would be allowed to stay, Jacob's sibling and Liz decided that they needed to both endear the creature to Sprout while also proving that it would leave her Mandrakes alone. However, at that moment, Sir Ribbithe started to hop closer to the Dugbog. Fearing that this movement would startle the Dugbog, who was still getting used to them, Liz approached the Dugbog in an effort to move Sir Ribbithe away from it. The frightened Dugbog lunged forward and nipped Liz on the ankle with a warning bite before running away and hiding behind a nearby bolder. Liz knew that the Dugbog hadn't intended to really hurt her, realising that the Dugbog was clearly intelligent enough to communicate by biting, just not well-behaved enough to not bite. Jacob's sibling suggested that this intelligence could enable them to train the Dugbog to stay away from Professor Sprout's Mandrakes, which would enable the creature to remain at Hogwarts. Having never trained a wild Dugbog before, the two decided to take the creature to Professor Silvanus Kettleburn for help.[1]
Upon informing Kettleburn of the Dugbog's situation, Jacob's sibling and Liz asked Kettleburn to help teach the Dugbog some tricks to help endear it to Sprout and to help train it to stay away from her Mandrakes. After determining exactly why helping out the Dugbog was so important to them, Kettleburn agreed to help train the Dugbog. Knowing that Dugbogs were only able to learn a few things at a time, Kettleburn suggested that the three of them should come up with three tricks that would both endear the creature to Sprout and train it to stay away from her Mandrakes. The three eventually decided to teach the Dugbog to roll over, come when called, and to stay, as these three tricks would be both cute and practical. Kettleburn suggested that Jacob's sibling and Liz would only need patience, encouragement, and food to train the Dugbog, as the creature already trusted Jacob's sibling. He advised that they take the Dugbog to the forest in the Magical Creatures Reserve for its training, as it would be safe and hidden there in case anything went wrong.[1]
Upon arriving at the forest, Jacob's sibling and Liz started to train the Dugbog, finding that it quickly started to understand all three of the tricks it was being taught. However, at that moment, Professor Sprout arrived in the forest, having been convinced by Hagrid to meet with the Dugbog before judging it. Having overheard the pair attempting to train the Dugbog, she asked them to show her what they had been working on. Jacob's sibling presented the Dugbog's coming when called trick, which the Dugbog completed successfully, earning itself a treat for its efforts. However, Sprout was unimpressed, as, although she admitted the trick was cute, she already knew that the Dugbog would go wherever food was. Jacob's sibling next presented the Dugbog's roll over trick, which the Dugbog once again completed successfully, earning itself another treat. While Sprout was much more impressed with this trick, admitting that the creature was adorable and that its tricks were delightful, she was still concerned with what would happen to her Mandrakes if the Dugbog was allowed to remain at Hogwarts. At this, Jacob's sibling finally presented the Dugbog's stay trick by telling the Dugbog to stay put and then placing a treat on the ground directly in front of it. The Dugbog completed this trick successfully too, greatly impressing Professor Sprout. Sprout decided that the Dugbog could remain at Hogwarts if it could pass one final test. She stated that she had brought some Mandrake pieces with her and that, if the Dugbog could resist them, it would be allowed to remain at Hogwarts. While Jacob's sibling tried to get the Dugbog to stay still, it immediately ran forward and ate all of the Mandrake pieces. While Sprout admitted that the two had done a wonderful job training the Dugbog, she also claimed that it was unable to control itself around Mandrakes and that she couldn't protect them herself all of the time. Unwilling to provide Jacob's sibling and Liz with any more time to train the Dugbog, she stated that it needed to be banished from Hogwarts.[1]
At that moment, the Dugbog immediately ran away from the scene. Professor Sprout, fearing that the creature was headed towards Greenhouse Three to eat her Mandrakes, rushed after it. However, Jacob's sibling theorised that the Dugbog was simply attempting to hide until it felt safe again. Knowing that the last place the Dugbog had felt completely safe was in the woodpile at Hagrid's hut, Jacob's sibling and Liz immediately rushed there to try to find it before Sprout did. The pair found that the Dugbog had indeed ran straight into the woodpile, with Hagrid and Fang trying to coax it out. While they informed Hagrid of the situation, Jacob's sibling and Liz joined the effort to coax the Dugbog back out, which proved to be successful, as the Dugbog slowly emerged from the woodpile. Realising that they couldn't change the Dugbog's nature, as it found Mandrakes irresistible and would always attempt to eat any if they were nearby, Liz suggested that, as Sprout couldn't protect the Mandrakes all the time by herself, they should protect the Mandrakes in shifts, offering herself to take the first watch. However, Jacob's sibling instead suggested that they should cast the Shield Charm on the Mandrakes, as the magic would bounce the Dugbog back if it ever got too close to them. Liz and Hagrid agreed that the plan could work, although Jacob's sibling would need to get Sprout's permission to use a spell on her plants and they would need to bring the Dugbog to the greenhouse to demonstrate whether or not the plan worked successfully.[1]
Upon explaining their plan to Professor Sprout and convincing her to allow them to cast a spell on her plants, Sprout allowed Jacob's sibling to cast a Shield Charm on her Mandrakes. After the spell had been cast successfully, Jacob's sibling, Liz, and Sprout let the Dugbog attempt to eat the Mandrakes, only for the Shield Charm surrounding the plants to knock the creature backward onto its backside. With her Mandrakes now completely protected from the Dugbog, Sprout agreed to allow the Dugbog to remain at Hogwarts and even offered to spare a few small Mandrake pieces for the Dugbog to eat as a compromise and to visit it in the Magical Creatures Reserve from time to time, still finding the creature adorable. Thrilled with this news, Jacob's sibling and Liz took the Dugbog back to the shore of the Great Lake to inform Hagrid of these new developments. Hagrid was excited by the news, although he claimed that no one was truly happier about the Dugbog being allowed to stay than the Dugbog itself. Jacob's sibling told Hagrid that Sprout had offered to see the Dugbog in the reserve and decided to teach it one more trick as a surprise for her. They decided to train the Dugbog to give a final bow, which the Dugbog was able to successfully do after some training. Although Jacob's sibling was saddened that they would no longer get to spend time with the Dugbog, Hagrid assured them that it wouldn't be far thanks to their hard work and that they could visit it anytime. Before returning to the reserve, the Dugbog approached Jacob's sibling and croaked at them, thanking them for all of their efforts and saying goodbye for the time being.[1]
